One-liners of Advice

Uh oh-- it won't let me put the entire line (I guess that makes it a 2 liner, not a one-liner). My recommendation is:
When asking a teacher to write you a recommendation, fill out as much of the form as you can for them in advance, and provide a stamped, preaddresssed envelope with it. And put a little "thank you" post-it note on it. Your teachers are taking their personal time to write you something that could have a significant impact on your future. The least you can do is be courteous and minimize any inconvenience. Plus, it is just the right thing to do.

You don't get a second chance to make a first impression

First learned that in sorority rush, but it applies to the college process re:applications and interviews.

OK..I wanted to see if this would bold face my first sentence. Actually...it's not bad advice. If you don't try, you certainly won't succeed.

celebrian 25 - Amen.

Do not assume that because you are below the "average" SAT etc. that you won't get in. Ditto for "typical" SATs to be awarded scholarships. Our son was 100+ points below the SAT profile and still got large merit scholarship. And he was NOT a recruited athlete.

carolyn - truer words were never spoken.

dmd77 - only problem is is your boss doesn't follow the corollary. Been there, seen that.

Mean people suck - don't be one. (Saw this on a bumper sticker today)

My advice: don't ever go anywhere without a book. I keep 2 in my car at all times, and have been known to read at long stop lights.

(I guess my 2nd one sort of relates to college?)

over30: My sister would like your book advice. She carries a bag with at least five books in it at all times:eek:! Her collection usually includes one book on an obscure religion, two poetry books, and one book on philosophy or history about a region of Europe. She says that we will all thank her for it if we fall down a rabbit hole and are unable to get into Wonderland! ;)

could be a corollary to the one about not being photographed w/o your clothes.

jmmom: when my husband was the boss (he started his first company at 22), I wouldn't let him go in before 8 or he had to leave by 6--but he sure did a lot of work at home!

Truer words were never spoken by a crazier person.

Too many kids grow up battling with their brothers and sisters, often started with some long-forgotten fights that hardened into permanent attitudes. And once you grow up and move away, if you left in a state of conflict it can leave gaps between you that will be difficult to erase once you don't see each other every day.

Any yet, hard as it may be for current HS students to believe, those old fogeys they see around them once were teenagers just like them! Kids who fought with their brothers and sisters. Yet time passes all too quickly, and one day those siblings are the only links you have left to your past (even if you all remember it differently!)

Take the first step, and the second and third if need be. Part of maturity is making sacrifices today for the future, but this is one you'll be glad you made.

It probably doesn't apply too much to admissions. It does apply to males. It's my favorite quote...and I believe it!

Your college life will have a beginning and an end, but don't expect it to have purpose in between.

Sorry, off-topic! :-)

Call your mom.

All wonderful if even sometimes contradictory advice.
I especially loved the thoughts in posts:

Never thought Mr. Perot would be above my head, but can someone translate? Curmudge?
