One month to prepare. Can I pull it off?

Hey, I'm Charissa. Here's the deal, I'm a n00B.

Until very recently the SAT's was just something I heard American teens babble about on MTV and in that movie with Scarlette Johansson. I'm an international student and I live in Trinidad. I've been out of high school for a while but I very recently got the opportunity to apply for a US college/university and I'm going for it. I need a minimum 2100-2200. And I've got little over a month. My reading and comprehension have always been strong. Math-not so much. I got a few practice books, including the "SAT Math Bible". Planning on working my way through all the chapters, even if it kills me. So far I find the Math to be very tricky but I think I'm slowly getting a hang of it.

Is this doable? Any advice at all would be help seeing that all of this is (literally) foreign to me.

It’s hard to say if it’s doable without knowing your current scores. In any case, you might want to check out my article “The Correct Way to Prepare for SAT Math.” It’s posted on this forum - just do a search. Since you only have a month you will probably want to multiply my suggested study time by 3. But I suggest that you still study in 20 minute blocks 3 times per day, as opposed to an hour once a day (this is just for math). I realize this is a pretty big time committment but you’re not giving yourself too much time. You might also consider giving yourself a bit more time and taking a later SAT.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I read the article, very helpful. And yeah, I’m planning on basically studying every day for as many hours as I can concentrate while taking little breaks. I haven’t tested yet, after I cover some material and familiarize myself with the exam I plan on doing several tests a day. Do you recommend paying for the online course on the official site btw? Is it worth the money?

I expect that you’ve taken a practice test or two. If you haven’t done so take one immediately. Do this under timed conditions. Assume a “9” on the essay. Post the score and re-ask your question. Let us know your goal. Only then can you get the advise you are seeking.

Okay, yeah maybe a diagnostic is in order. Will do.

Do a timed test and see for yourself where you are. Make sure the test is from College Board for a reliable self-assessment. Since you only have 1 month and a week or so, you don’t need to buy online course unless you plan to prepare for the future SATs. You can find few official tests online.

If you score 2100 and more, then you can expect to be fine. If you score lower, then it is not possible to meet your goal. SAT takes time to improve.

How can I improve from a 2100 on practice tests to 2300s on one month?? I consistently get more vocab questions wrong than passage based for CR though :/

YES, it is totally possible. My first time was March; prepared 2 weeks before and got a 2070. No practice until late August.

I got the Barron’s SAT book and just went through all of the practice tests in September. 1 month of practice. On the October 6th test I received a 2320 (800, 770, 750 79MC 8 Essay). Study the Hot Words in the Barron’s, do all the practice tests (skip essays if you like, I did), and read up on how to write an essay on this forum!
