One more time? I PROMISE I'll chance you back!

Hi there. So, I posted previously, freaking out about UChicago. Now that I've calmed down, I was hoping that a few of you would chance me for UChicago and all my other schools. I pinkie promise that I'll chance you back.

So, here's the list:
EA: UChicago
Amherst College
Cornell University
Oberlin College
Wesleyan
Bard College
Johns Hopkins
NYU (Gallatin)
Swarthmore
UMichigan
Williams
Middlebury
Northwestern
Wash U

And here are my semi-updated stats:
SAT IIs - Took in November (U.S. History, Literature, World History)
G.P.A. - unweighted: ~3.8, weighted: 5.2
ACT - 29 (English 35, Science 24, Math 25, Reading 33) (I'm VERY worried about this; taking it one more time in December.)
APs - Will have 13 by graduation; I am an AP Scholar with Distinction. All 5's on all APs taken so far.
Rank - Top 3%
Awards - Princeton Book Award, Smith College Book Award, National Gold Medal and several regional awards in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (honored at Carnegie Hall), President's Volunteer Service Award - Gold Level, Silver Knight nominee in English and Literature, Certificate for Superior Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, National Journalism Honor Roll, etc.

ECs - (I'm trying to keep this short, so I bulleted, just so you guys get the idea.)
*I am the only student who sits on the School Board, elected by my peers to represent 380,000 students.
*Volunteered at orphanages in Ghana and Vietnam, then started a Pen Pal Program between schools here and there. We just registered as a 501(c)(3) and have expanded to four schools in Miami and three abroad.
*Appointed to the Superintendent's Student Services Advisory Committee.
*Sit on the Youth Advisory Committee of the Children's Trust of Miami-Dade County.
*I write for the Miami Herald's community news network.
*My writing has been published in five different publications, both local and national.
*Managing Editor of the my school's newspaper, which was just recently rated as "All-American" by the National Scholastic Press Association.
*I work on national editorial board of a student-run national lit magazine.
*I sit on the board of directors of my district's United Way.
*In four honor societies (National, English, Social Studies, Quill and Scroll). Hold officer positions.
*President of Interact Service Club; brought membership from an original 8 to 82 and currently organizing a district conference.

Recs: Great, but then again, so are everyone else's. The only thing worth mentioning is that I have one from a UChicago professor, whose class I aced over this past summer. (I took undergraduate courses there and got an A and a A-).

To anyone who reads all this and bothers to chance me: YOU ARE A SAINT!

P.S. Sorry I"ve posted this in my other thread too. Accidental, I swear, lol.

Ur ECs are strong but ur scores may let u down…Pull up your act to a 31 -32 …

With your present scores Cornell seems to be your only high reach you will definitely make it into more than 3/4th of ur schools

chance

Quote: With your present scores Cornell seems to be your only high reach you will definitely make it into more than 3/4th of ur schools

That is being overly optimistic, imo. You have an impressive resume, but you also have an impressive list of selective schools with very competitive applicant pools. Your ACT score will not be as competitive at many of the schools on your list. Your essays may be the deciding factor at some of these schools as well as a jump in your ACT score at your Dec. sitting. Good luck!

goodluck although i feel cornell would be like aiming too high

With the ACT scores, Cornell seems a bit high.

But your very strong focused EC, as well as unweighted GPA will help you out. Take it again once more and see what you get, it will never hurt.

Cornell would be low-mid reach more towards low side, will be low reach - high match if ACT scores go up
Everything else is high match/match/safety.

ACT maybe a bit up and if you did well on SAT ii’s then U of Chicago might be low reach. Cornell is just as hard

EA: UChicago: low reach/mid reach
Cornell University: high match/low reach
Bard College: in/match
Johns Hopkins: mid reach
NYU (Gallatin): matchy/high match
UMichigan: In
Northwestern: mid reach
Wash U: Match

You’re in great shape if your score goes up by December. You’ll be a strong candidate for Cornell if you increase ACT a few points or so.

LAST MINUTE STUDYING! Woohoo!

Thanks for resurrecting my thread, I thought she was a goner > [Chance for Toppies! Will chance BACK! - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1028062&referrerid=421954)

i think the previous posts are not as optimistic as they can be. looking at everything, I think you have a good chance at all of your schools despite your low ACT. up your ACT by 3+ points and you have a very very high chance for all!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1028136-chance-berk.html</a></p>

Cornell and UChicago are mid-reaches but the rest of the schools are pretty much matches for you. If you can improve your ACT by at least 2 points you will be competitive for Cornell and UChicago

Under no circumstances are Amherst, Swathmore, JHU, Middlebury, Northwestern or Williams matches.

I don’t see any true safeties on your list.

@schmohawk: Then, what suggestions do you have in terms of possible safeties? And why isn’t Bard a safety if they don’t require scores at all?

I think your extracurriculars are really good but like many people mentioned before me, your act scores are really low…especially for U of Chicago and Cornell John Hopkins, Northwestern etc. You should try to bump those scores up but everything else looks fine. If math and science are your weak subjects why dont you consider taking the SAT I? The math is slightly easier and there is no science section.

Wow, with your ec’s you’re sitting pretty! just get that ACT or SAT up. How did you score in the subject tests? Also, what is your ethnicity?

If your school is at all competitive and it’s not rare for your school to send top kids to top schools, I think you’ve got a really good chance at most of these. Best of luck!

i think ur chances for umich are aight. if ur oos 70%, and in state probz 80%. that act is bringing u down as umich mid 50% is 28-32 and ur barely in. EC are good

OK, Bard w/o scores is a match, not a safety. True safeties are schools with highish admit rates whose scores you exceed by a lot. IOW, they never reject anyone with your profile-
your whole profile, including that ACT.

Middlebury is test optional (you have to submit SAT2s, I think). So are Holy Cross and Bowdoin?

To anon44: Yeah, my school’s pretty competitive. Last year, we sent five kids to UPenn, one to Harvard, etc. I’ll know about my subject tests come November 23rd, but I chose stuff I’m good at, so I’m pretty optimistic. And ethnicity-wise I’m just white, lol.

To schmohawk: Yeah, Bowdoin is test optional and I’m trying to decide to apply there or not. I’m not crazy about the school itself, to be completely honest.

I’m just trying to determine how much test scores are really going to hinder me in this process, because really everything else is in order and fits or exceeds standards. This question especially applies to the University of Chicago, where I have a rec from a professor whose class I took this summer and I’m kind of invested in the idea of going there… Basically, I’d like to know NOW if my chances are really destroyed by my inability to test.

i think you probably have a shot at all of those schools. i’m saying this because your ecs are solid and if you have a kick ass essay, you’ll probably get into most.

chance me please :)

Wash U St. Louis is definitely a reach, as the 25th percentile ACT is a 32. Bump up your test scores and you’ll have a decent shot.

You have awesome some wonderful ECs and awards, great job! The one thing pulling you down is your test scores…like everybody else said. If you manage to pull those up, then only luck of the draw may be your only hindrance from getting accepted where you want :)

EA- UChicago: mid reach
Cornell University: low reach
Bard College: high match
Johns Hopkins: mid reach
NYU (Gallatin): high match
UMichigan: great chance
Northwestern: mid reach
Wash U: high match
