We will be attending a wedding in Raleigh NC mid-October. We were going to fly but decided to drive to avoid airline-induced stressed (driving stress is a bit easier to manage). We are coming from NJ and Richmond VA seems like a nice place to stop to break up the trip.
I’m looking for suggestions on a where to stay and what to do. Usually we prefer to walk around cities and stumble upon things. However, since we will only be there for a day we would like to be a bit more strategic. To further complicate things, I am currently recuperating from a broken ankle and attendant surgery. I’m not sure what physical limitations I may still have at that time - I currently am using a wheelchair/knee scooter.
Thanks for your help. All suggestions are most appreciated.
I’d recommend staying in Shockoe Slip. It’s in a scenic part of downtown Richmond with cobblestone streets and tons of restaurants, breweries and is near the James River. There’s a lot of very cool public art and statues along the river (if your ankle is up for a walk!). The Berkeley Hotel is great. I haven’t spent much time there recently, but Bottoms Up Pizza is great, plus a couple of old time favorites in the neighborhood are Sam Millers (seafood) and the Tobacco Company. There are tons of newer restaurants though in Shockoe Slip/Shockoe Bottom, so you may want to try google for some newer ideas.
Church Hill is a historic, not far area to visit - great views. The Fan District and Carytown are also cool neighborhoods for window shopping and good food.
Tons of civil war stuff to do/see if you’re interested in that. The Virginia Museum is a very nice art museum, and worth a stopover just to see the Rumors of War statue out front by Kehinde Wiley (who Barack Obama chose to paint his official portrait.)

Thank you so much for this. Shockoe Slip sounds perfect for us this trip. I’m hoping I can hobble around some as by that time I should be 3 weeks post cast.
Thanks again
