One of the best books I've read in the last 6 months is . .

I really like Trevor Noah and I know he has an interesting background, so I’ll add his book to my reading list.

@westcoastmomof2

I have Noah’s book in queue. I’ve also heard from others that the audio version is very good.

Bruce Springsteen’s memoir, Born to Run, was mentioned upthread. I just finished it on audio, read by Springsteen himself, and I did enjoy it quite a bit more than expected.

I like some of his music, not a huge fan, have never seen him in concert, don’t know much about him or The E Street Band, and yet, it was a good listen. And, it wasn’t a juicy gossip-filled tell-all!

So, I think that says something! Not just for die-hard fans.

@ignatius I just downloaded The Thief to my kindle! Looks like my kind of book series.

@intparent The Rook is one of my all time favorites!

Also, put me on the bandwagon for Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance. I listened to the audiobook and was hooked for a couple of days. A really interesting read.

@jedwards70: Remember The Queen’s Thief series just gets stronger with each book. The King of Attolia #3 in the series happens to be my favorite. Happy reading!

@jedwards70 and @intparent: I started The Rook two days ago. What a great first sentence: “Dear You, The body you are wearing used to be mine.”

And I’m on a waitlist at the library for Hillbilly Elegy.

(I love this thread!)

Author on The Rook? I’m seeing 2 at Audible. TIA

I’ve been reading some of the books on @jaylynn 's link for the Tournament of Books. http://www.themorningnews.org/article/the-2017-tournament-of-books-shortlist-and-judges

So far I’ve finished *All the Birds in the Sky/i and *Sweet Lamb of Heaven/i. Really liked the former, but not-so-much, the latter – it just took too long to get interesting.

As a guilty pleasure, I just start reading The Fireman by Joe Hill. It’s long (800 pages?) but so far, it’s a good story.

@Midwest67: The Rook - Daniel O’Malley

@scout59: Take a look at the CC discussion of The Fireman after you’ve finished reading it:

Wow - thanks, @ignatius! I didn’t realize it was a CC book club book! Suddenly my pleasure doesn’t feel so guilty after all.

I see where the latest Lariat List came out last November: http://www.txla.org/sites/tla/files/groups/lariat/docs/Lariat%202017%20Short%20List%20Press%20Announcement.pdf.

The Lariat List is chosen annually by a librarian group in Texas. The books in the list are fiction and must be “a pleasure to read” (or so say the librarians).

There are some familiar titles on the list!

That’s not the official Lariat List 2017, which was supposed to be released in Jan. I’ve been watching for it. It will choose 25 titles from that “short” list of 52.

Argh. So it’s the short list for the final list?

Guess I have to wait a little longer for the final list to come out – or just start reading some of the finalists.

Oh, I really liked Sleeping Giants and Dark Matter on that list. I have to bump Crosstalk up my to read list.

Anyone near Houston? Amor Towles, the author of A Gentleman in Moscow, will be doing an author event at the Blue Willow Bookshop tomorrow.

^^^ Thanks for the info. I may go; I’m been interested in the book.

It’s out :slight_smile: : http://www.txla.org/lariat

I can’t believe that I haven’t read any of the books. That’s never happened to me before. I see several I wanted to read but just never picked up. Looks like I need to get busy.

Thanks @ignatius!! I’ve only read two of them myself, and so many of them sound interesting. Time to reserve some books at my library…

I’ve read two of them too. My list just keeps growing and growing. Reading “The Dry” by Jane Harper now. A page turner.

I read a few on the list and one is very “under the radar” so I’ll recommend it–Sleeping Giants. It was great and recently on Book Bub so you may be able to download it cheap!

I also took @ignatius 's advice and read The Thief. I loved it and am on to the next. My reading has over taken my participation in the class of 2017 board. Plus, my DS17 has decided on a school so the excitement has died down for now.

@cartera45 - “The Dry” sounds like my kind of book! I just put my name on the hold list at my library - just 11 people in front of me.

@scout59: You know that if you like it, I’ll like it!! Let me know what you think! :slight_smile:

Since I’m listening to The Dry, I get to enjoy the great voice (accent) of Steven Shanahan.
