Boy did Move In Day come fast.

Yeah, this is when it hits me that son is moving down to Oakland and not going back to high school with his 2 siblings.

Monday starts year two for us. It gets easier. I think.

We get to miss the move-in this semester but will do it January (hope it isn’t snowing then). Just beware of the buses traveling the opposite way of traffic - so look both ways before crossing. We were just astounded by it the first time we visited Pitt.

^^^ Good advice! Those bus lanes still scare me! Best of luck, everyone!

I wish my daughter were moving into a dorm. Then it’s just “drop everything and run.” Now, I have to move her into an apartment that’s unfurnished. I’m not looking forward to that Ikea trip. Anyway, enjoy those dorms while you have them! :)

LurkNessMonster: if PITT cannot find a bed for DS for Spring semester (supposedly guaranteed since he is coming off a co-op rotation) we will be doing the same. Am not looking forward to furnishing an apartment and I am extremely hesitant about renting/buying second-hand furniture especially with the resurgence of the bed bugs.

MTnest, I’m thinking positive for your son and hoping that he gets on-campus housing when he returns! And I hope he enjoys his co-op experience too.

MT Nest, my daughter has an apartment mate who will be doing study abroad in the spring. There must be others doing the same.

If we are staying at the Wyndham and my son is moving into Forbes - is it possible to leave the car in the Wyndham lot and use one of those carts to take everything over? Or do we have to park near the dorm?

Thinking it would be easier not to get caught in a traffic jam if possible,

The Wyndham parking garage is very odd. It is almost like a car storage unit. They park your car for you. I think that is so you don’t get killed walking out.

Anyway, I would probably drive the car. If you only have one or two loads, you could walk it over, but any more I would probably drive although it is less than half a block. What you could do is talk to the valet(?) and ask whether you could leave your car at the bottom of the ramp for 30 minutes and then walk the stuff across to Forbes. The ramp into the garage is wide enough for a couple of cars. The problem will be that everyone will want to do the same thing.

I think that there may be some meters on the road that runs perpendicular to Forbes.

Usually, Pitt is very good about reserving spaces for cars near each dorm. Look for signs on the parking meters. And people are supposed to move their cars when they’re finished.

I agree with MD Mom that the Wyndham garage is weird. But I’m sure that the Wyndham people are used to having students for move-in, and they probably can recommend the easiest way. And having tip money handy won’t hurt!

If you have problems finding a space, there is also a large city parking garage on the corner of Semple and Forbes, right across the street from Forbes Hall next to the gas station.

The Wyndham front desk people said that the gas station folks across the street will have you towed, so don’t park there.

What good is a city parking lot if you can’t park there? Can you park there if you pay? I never really looked at that lot too closely.

Thanks. I guess asking at the front desk makes sense. Either way we will get an early start so hopefully wont be too bad.

When we moved our daughter into Forbes 3 years ago we were able to park in the street behind Forbes for unloading. I think it’s called Epley Place or something like that. Check on the PITT map. It was really quite convenient. The only thing better was parking in the garage under Forbes-Craig the following year.

The gas station lot and city parking garage are two different things. I would expect Pitt may have some sort of system for people to unload their cars anyway, like the aforementioned parking on Euler Way.

Just be sure to have lots of patience as there are only so many spaces and LOTS of students moving in at the same time.

For those moving into Towers – the wait for elevators will be long especially if you are on the floors with service of only ONE elevator. DS was very lucky to be on one of those floors :(

Just finished moving Pitt daughter’s twin into her school using large laundry bin style carts, which worked considerably better than the hotel valet style carts provided by eldest daughter’s school. Anybody know which kind of carts are used by Pitt?

Also, do any of you know if there might be street parking available in front of those apartments on McKee down from the Wyndham?

Pitt uses laundry carts with sides on them. You can stack stuff pretty high especially if you have the Rubbermaid boxes.
