one writing question please

scientists are still trying to account for sudden deaths among gray whales but speculating that several events prevented them from gorging on the tiny shrimp like creatures that they typically feed on.

speculating or speculate?? the answer is speculate but i dont understand the concept.

Think of it this way:
The original sentence is essentially saying “Scientists speculating” instead of “Scientists speculate.”

It is being used as a gerund, but a verb is needed.

okay but then it is saying scientists speculate(verb) that several event (which were) prevented them from gorging …???

Why the “which were?”
It’s simply:
Scientists speculate that several events prevented them…

Just like you would say:
The students thought that the SAT helped them attend college.
You wouldn’t say:
The students thought that the SAT (which was) helped them attend college.

oh okay thank you! could you help me this question too?

in ornette coleman’s hand, one instrument after the other was featured so quickly that band members were essentially parts of an ensemble and a soloist simultaneously.

i picked a soloist but the answer is the other. shouldn’t it be soloists??

Where did you get that question?

the other should probably be another. one instrument after another makes sense to me?

OP is correct; there are two grammatical mistakes (hence my question).

What is this of?
