I am looking to transfer after this year to FSU, I was wondering about the online classes their. I am going for a bachelors in business administration, would I be able to take many or most of my classes online? What are the requirements for the types of classes their? Do I have to have at least one on campus course every semester or does that not matter? I was only hoping to be on campus for 2 of my last 6 semesters. I know I may have to go on campus to take exams but that is ok. Is there a limit to how many online classes I can take? Do they have several options for online classes? The community college I am at now has almost every class online, just wondering if it is like that.

The number of online classes available can greatly vary by major. I know of some majors that there isn’t so much as an elective that’s offered online.

With the Business Administration degree only being offered at the FSU Panama City campus, which is very limited in what it offers, I would expect a few classes to be offered online while the majority weren’t. It isn’t like your community college where the majority of courses are offered online; in fact, most aren’t.

If you’re interested in seeing a list of courses that are offered online:

[Since the Bachelors in Business Administration isn’t an online degree, you’re going to have courses (likely most of them) that aren’t offered online.](Distance@FSU)

This is a good question. I wonder about this because someone I know has a D at that other school a bit downstate from Tally. This mom says that far too many of her daughter’s classes are online and that is not what she had originally envisioned. I wonder if this was arranged intentionally by the student or not. A thread on that forum also speaks of students not finding lecture classes for a certain course but having many online options.

It mostly depends on the department. A number of “[Subject] 101” level classes can be taken online. Not all of them, of course, but a significant number.

From there, most courses, especially 3000/4000 level courses aren’t really taught online. I know of a few, but once you get into the classes that are required for a major, they’re generally not online.

Online classes are sort of an interesting conundrum for universities like FSU. In theory, an online course is great for whoever is getting paid to teach, because it’s relatively easy to set up an online course where quizzes and tests are graded automatically, and all the professor has to do while teaching is post notes, send emails, and answer questions. I have seen online classes at FSU have 1000 seats in them before- far larger than just about any lecture class, and there’s no need to find a place on campus where everyone can meet for lectures.

With popular electives, especially low-level courses, a lot of departments will have one or two lecture sections, and then another online section.

1000 seats? Really? What class was this? I’ve been in classes with over 100, but 1000 seems crazy to me.

There’s actually a couple Hospitality courses that I have seen that had 1000 seats.

From the Course Search, it looks like they actually had sections of some classes with 2000 seats in the Spring. Granted, those didn’t fill up, but that’s just insane. I’m assuming that they had a large number of TAs for the class:

Also, it appears that BSC1005- Baby Bio’s on-campus lecture section had 1100 seats in the Spring, and it nearly filled up (only 15 seats open… wow):

Ahhh… NOW I understand the popularity! I wish I knew about those classes before I finished my electives.
