What has been your child's experience with online high school courses? We've been shocked to find that the worse online class our child has taken has been with Northwestern's Gifted Learning Links. Our 14 year old has been taking 2-3 online high school classes a year to replace middle school courses in science, social studies and now math. We chose GLL this time because his other online classes were not considered "honors" and we thought he would be better prepared for precalculus if he took honors algebra 2. It has turned out to be a disaster. No instruction whatsoever. It is basically a correspondence course via email. The teacher gives a list of assignments with due dates, quizzes and tests with due dates. He only grades quizzes and tests and says, "contact me if you have any questions about the assignments". My son is an outstanding student but he still can't tell whether he understands without getting any feedback on assignments or any instruction. Definitely not worth the $800. His Indiana Online Academy courses, on the other hand, have incorporated technology very well, with links to video, powerpoints and other web resources. He's taken world history and geography, biology and earth and space science. They have had challenging and creative assignments and all incorporated java script so that he could have instant feedback on many assignments. Do you have any online high school providers to recommend?

We have used Virtual High School and Aventa Learning. Keystone was not successful for us at all.

The experience varies from program to program, and, especially, in our household, depended on the student’s work habits and learning style.

One of our kids was so happy with an AP US History class online, that we then convinced a foundation to fund online courses for our high school. Then, another one of our kids took a class and hated it!

I use Keystone and I love it. The classes are set up with lectures, power points, guided readings, written assignments, multiple choices, games, etc.

Well, if you are motivated and are taking a language like latin or a history, the Florida Virtual School is great. And it is free if you are a Florida resident.
