Do you still have to live off campus senior year?

It is not required that you live off-campus one year, although a not insignificant number of students get “pushed” off-campus either sophomore or junior year, depending on their college’s housing jack bylaws.

You do not need to live off campus senior year. That is not true at all.

To reiterate, some colleges kick off juniors and some sophomores. At Wiess, we knock out Sophomores. Then we assign points.

Freshmen / Athletes - Guaranteed
Seniors - 4
Juniors - 3
Sophomores - 2
Transfers - 1

We start by saying that NO sophomores can live on campus. Then all freshmen beds are assigned out. After that, juniors/seniors form suites. I lived with 2 juniors and another senior my final year, so we had 14 points. My friends, who were all seniors had 16.

We start with 16 points. All those with 16 points put their names in a hat and we pick one. They get to pick their room first. Once all the 16’s are done, we move to 15’s and so on. In the end, we tally the total who are on campus and see how many remaining beds there are.

The sophomores meanwhile have a ‘room jack’. Everyone puts their name in the hat (who wants to live on campus) and they draw. The first out of the hat is the LAST to live on campus. The list goes all the way down. The last few are then offered beds based on the number remaining from above. Over time, people decide to move off campus or sometimes transfer to other colleges and the list moves down.

While I lived on campus for all 4 years (I worked for the administration/housing department so I had to) living off campus is great. Now that I have graduated I realize how much more awesome my apartment is. You don’t get a kitchen on campus.

Right now, I overlook the Hermann park golf course. Living on campus cannot beat that.

Maybe they should have built more housing before growing from just over 3000 undergrads to 4000 so quickly.

This is a disappointment. I expect a LAC to provide on-campus housing for at least 3 years – certainly not for only 1 year.

We thought that being a small research college what made it unique. Perhaps Rice is technically no longer in the LAC-type college category.

A few things

Also, they did build more housing — two new colleges, Duncan and McMurtry, opened last year.

As someone who has to go through room jack in the current week, I can say that the majority of every grade who intend to live on campus can at my college (Lovett). In the unlikely scenario I don’t receive housing (seems to be about a 1 in 10 chance at this point), there are a ton of fantastic (and cheaper) off campus housing options. That said, I’d love to stay on.

Lovett is one of the easier colleges to get housing as well. It is very likely that everyone will get a bed.
