Only received 10,000 in grants as opposed to

From UCSD I received 10,000 in grants (cal grant included) and around 6,000 in loans since the total cost is 17,000 roughly.

However, from UCI I received around 15,000 in grants (includes cal grant) and 8,500 in loans.

So, is there a ratio for grants:loans that they use? Did I receive only 10,000 for UCSD only b/c I'm a Winter admit and the total cost is less? Or should I expect the same amount of grants for following years since I'll be starting from the fall, and assume EFC 1,533 is same.

Each of the UC’s is different, and they will award different finaid packages, even though they’re working on the same EFC number.

If the grants are need-based, you can’t assume that you’ll receive the same amount next year, since you resubmit FAFSA each year, and your EFC and need changes each year. Cal Grant will continue if you continue to meet the GPA and income thresholds.

If they’re merit scholarships, they’ll often continue each year, but you need to verify that with the school.

Total cost at UCSD is much higher than 17K, btw.

Call and ask UCSD – but I would assume that the grant portion would increase for your second year given that you’ll be enrolled for three quarters.

What I am curious about: if you enroll at a CC fall semester and then do UCSD winter and spring, can you get CalGrant and Pell $ for fall semester? Does it affect what UCSD can do for you winter and spring?

to sblake7: My total cost for UCSD is 17k because I’m winter admit.

The original question I have is did I receive only 10,000 (UCSD grant + pell + Cal grant) b/c I’m a winter admit?

Sorry if it wasn’t clear.

to arabrab: UCSD runs on quarter system, and don’t they give you the grant money for the year/ 2 or 3 quarters?

dude, 10000 grant for a WINTER admit is great! be happy :)

i think i got around 7k, and i was a fall admit. fyi, my grant/loan ratio was 7k to…whatever was left.
