I left college due to poor grades, I had four credits for first semester and only one for my second semester. (Freshman year.)
I do have four college credits from high school, but two of them are for tech school related courses. The other two are Hist/Eng classes.
This semester, I decided to start with three classes at my local community college. I really enjoy one, am struggling with the other and one of my classes was cancelled at the last second. So I’m down to taking two classes this semester and I’m not sure if I’m heading in the right direction. I’d like to get on track to return to a regular four year college, but I really don’t want to spend an excessive amount of time in school.
What are my options? Is it a good idea to take it slow and try and build my GPA back up?
How many days ago did classes start? Is it too late to get into a class? You should meet with an academic advisor to be sure you are on track with courses that will transfer to a four year uni. If you are struggling with a course, go to professor office hours. Go to the tutoring center. Dont just struggle on your own. You have to try for good grades in classes you don’t like, as well as those you do.
If you are still in the add/drop period, you can add another class. But work closely with the professor to make up anywork. I agree…meet with your advisor ASAP
Classes started a couple weeks ago, there are a couple other sessions that extend into the fall semester however. Late start ones.
I’ve already talked to some advising people about my situation, I’m just not sure if it’s the best decision to take things slow until I’m back into the passing classes thing that I had trouble with my previous semester. I’m not deep enough into the semester to make anything up, but I’m trying to stay on top of it to the best of my abilities.
However you need to have a minimum of 12 credits or you may not be eligible for financial aid - and if you’re taking too few credits you may run out of aid before you finish. Therefore, if you can pay your current credits at the community college “out of pocket” it might be better to do so.
If you can afford to pay for these 2 classes out of pocket, do so, and don’t worry about how slow you’re going. It is better to take 2 now, and maybe 3 or 4 next semester after you are used to being at school. It is far better to do well in those, and prove not just to the college, but to yourself, that you can do well. Build your confidence. By next fall you will have credit for 8 or more classes - enough to be considered a sophomore. If you do really well in them, you will have at least a 2.5 GPA. One more year, and you can earn an associates degree, and transfer to a 4-year school, in the knowledge that you figured out what works for you. People take many paths through college, 4 years and done is not even “average.” Look around you in class, there will be other students older than you - some many years older - who have decided to earn a degree. Set your own pace, and reach for the stars!
