Hi, DD is interested in CSU's equine science program but we really have no idea how competitive it is for in-state much less OOS students. Is there a place on the website that gives that information? I looked but came up empty handed.

Also if you have first hand knowledge I would really like to hear about it. Thanks

There is no separate admissions for the equine program, so if your D has the grades/scores for CSU admission, she can major in equine. According to the website, mid-50th % is GPA: 3.2-3.8, ACT Composite: 22-26, SAT Combined (critical reading and math ONLY): 1020-1220. And I am pretty sure they welcome OOS tuition $, given the somewhat feeble state of higher ed support in Colorado.

We visited and were impressed by the facilities and course choices. My D was a little intimidated by the size of the program (400 kids, 95% female)

Thanks! Is your D considering pre-vet too? I think we may visit next fall or maybe after admissions. She has the stats to get in so it's good to know that there aren't special admissions criteria for the program. I think my D would be OK with the enrollment statistics you gave. At this point she wants to hang w/ the ponies and ski.

At this point she is considering pre-vet, but she knows she would have to work much harder to get her grades in shooting distance. I have mixed feelings about equine science as a major, since options other than vet school are pretty narrow. But its the only academic area D is interested in, so that's what she'll do.

D is also going to apply to Montana State in Bozeman. Equine program is considerably smaller, so we'll need to visit. Skiing is lots closer, tho!

You make a good point about the breadth of options offered by equine science major. Perhaps combining it with a bio major would make it more useful. My D is also looking at Cal Poly and UC Davis. She is looking at Carroll College in Montana too. She is unsure now if she should choose based on program or overall undergrad experience.
