I would also have some strong letters of recommendations also

I'd say you have a good chance, just make sure to apply Early Action and write good essays and all that jazz.

good chance. Meet the deadlines on time and excel in the essays.

My only suggestion would be to improve your ACT but you still have a good shot

I'm eager to find out how difficult it will be for an OOS this upcoming year.

thank you all. cause i am so nervous that i wont get in for that is my number one choice.

make sure you apply early!! your chances will increase significantly.

I would also make contact with the university. go ahead and establish your account, visit, meet with major area profs, ....

I'd say slight reach (OOS, ACT is low for OOS)...I was deferred and then waitlisted with a 3.97/4.0 uw, 31 ACT, 9 AP/honors courses, and ranked in the top 1.5% of my class. I had slightly stronger ECs....soo yes I'd def try and bolster the ACT. Also, I'd suggest applying RD. Only apply EA if you can get a 33+ on the ACT. I think applying EA may have hurt me in the end, as I'd already had the "deferred" stamp on my app. The extra wait is worth it for a better chance.

good luck, UNC is a great school!

I have to disagree with you -> applying EA is definitely a lot better than RD and can only help you if you get deferred once they look at RD applicants. It in no way hurts you. If they waitlist you it's because you have something they like but they aren't sure if they will find lots of that in the RD applicants. if they do, you're out, if they don't you're in. Also, you guys focus too much on scores and what not, I got in with average SAT scores (didn't take the ACT) OOS and my class rank wasn't that high at all either. It's about everything you bring to the table. I believe essays are the most important part of your application IMO.

i disagree with vc08. He will probably be ****ed to know that I got in OOS EA with a 31 and a GPA far/rank far lower than his. But i think its all about the whole package, that is why i got in. And i feel carolinaheels seems like someone who might have the whole package. Also the EA is not binding and especially next year, a lot more kids will apply to UNC RD after they got deferred from Yale and what not.

Haha why would I be "****ed"? It's not like you're unique in that. I got into 5 schools ranked higher than UNC, where I know there were others with higher scores, rank, etc. than me who were rejected. College admissions is a game, and you're setting yourself up for failure if you're counting on one school alone (in retrospect, the odds of me attending UNC if I had been admitted were very slim anyway). Take me, for example. I was admitted to UC Berkeley, UCLA honors/scholarship, UVA w/likely letter, Michigan, Boston College and Notre Dame (off waitlist). So, logic would tell you that an applicant admitted to those schools would be a solid candidate for admission to UNC, and probably has a pretty well-rounded resume. But, I was waitlisted (took name off). Thus, admissions remain a mystery in many cases. I'm not complaining, and that situation isn't uncommon either. That's why the top schools are top schools; they're unpredictable, and have a very strong applicant pool. Many, many qualified candidates get missed.

As for the whole package thing, I agree in a certain respect. Pretty much all colleges are looking for the "whole package". I mean, all things considered, most schools will take the guy with the 2100 SAT who was captain of his football team and President of two school clubs over the person with a 2130 who did absolutely nothing outside of school. While carolinaheels has a very strong resume, there are about 10-15 people at my high school alone who have similar ECs and such, and believe me when I say we don't exactly rock the socks off admissions officers with our school profile. I'm simply suggesting he retake the ACT for a better chance. Not to say he won't get in with the current score, he'd just have a better shot with higher ones.

As for the EA...just going by what the admissions officer told me when I called inquiring about my waitlist status. But if you know more than them, the OP should listen to you I suppose.

Armando: agree with your assessment about the scores. If you are an ethnic or racial minority, that could have helped a bit as well. Definitely don't want to stir a debate about that, but I'm just saying. Though obviously you'd still have to be well-qualified. Anywho, congrats on getting in, UNC is an excellent school :)

Apply E.a.!!!!

Apply Early Action, I know people in the admissions department and Early Action never hurts, it improves your chances. People deferred in Early Action are the first people looked at in Regular Decision.

I was planning on applying early action anyway so thanks. I also think that I am going to take the ACT over again in September to see if I can get a higher score.

anyone else?

I think you have a preeeetty good chance. I thought you were kind of a bit borderline but being a black male would probably help too. unc lacks blacks and males. hahaha not to be prejudiced or anything, but it's jsut not diverse in those areas.

although I have to say, try not to obsess toooo much about the admissions, but more about what you want to study and what academic programs/majors there are available at schools. of course you want to maek your app outstanding, but for now I think you have built a pretty good prfile/resume and you just need to continue what you are doing with your ECs.

really show your interest in UNC and its academic programs in your essays! it's more about the learning-in-college-part than the getting-in-part. =D

anyways yea I think you hve a pretty good chance

What divinevalley said is completely true. Write about your interest in the school and what kind of internships/research you are willing to do in the future. I talked about my interest in doing research on Carolina Vaccine Institute. I found it very easy to write my essay because it was something that I am curiously engaged.

I would say you are a slight reach, but you definitely have a good shot.

I would agree with danny_125 and divinevalley about the essays, but only to a certain extent. If you are genuinely interested in a certain aspect of Carolina, go ahead and write about it. But if you aren't, don't force yourself to sound interested. The most important thing about the essay is writing about something that you are passionate about, preferably something that doesn't show up somewhere else on your application.

be ever so genuine in your essays.
