So I'm from a private liberal arts college on the east coast and am strongly considering applying to transfer for junior year to UCB. I was accepted my senior year of high school, but generally took on a distorted perception of the school. I visited the school again due to having many friends in the area from time to time and realized that berkeley has a lot more to offer than I initially thought. It would also be easiest to transition into as I have many acquaintances there.

My question is, how likely is it to get in as a transfer if I'm out of state (from a relatively well known LAC), but have gotten into UCB before? Thanks!

It is my understanding that from the entire pool of applicants, oos 4-year students are considered last (the order of preference is cc->in-state 4-year->other uc->csu->oos). Berkeley is known especially for turning away transfers of this and other kinds in favor of cc students, but it has definitely been done before, despite it being a slim chance. Get as high of a gpa as possible (3.7-8 at least, I would say), and get in contact with department heads at both your school and at berkeley, as well as the admissions office at berkeley to figure out exactly what classes correspond to one another. Ideally, to even be competitive, you need to satisfy all your GE requirements and all of your major pre-req’s (or most, depending on your major), by the spring of your sophomore year. As for the fact that you have gotten into ucb before, I have checked with many sources myself because I’m applying to ucb for fall 2013 despite having gotten in as a senior as well. Every source I’ve consulted with, including berkeley admissions themselves, has stated clearly that the fact that you have gotten in once before has no bearing whatsoever on your transfer application.
In summary, you are highly disadvantaged because you are oos, and the fact that you got into ucb before does not help you or hurt you. Although it definitely isn’t impossible to get in as a oos applicant, it’s pretty unlikely, even with a 4.0 gpa.

slapussillydawg, thanks for your response. I was given a curt, but similar response, earlier in the year when I asked about my transfer prospects to the admissions office. I’m going to pm you just because there aren’t that many students on this thread in even a slightly similar situation as I am. good luck with your prospects this coming may!

I’m in the same boat as you, yoursky! I was accepted into berkeley senior year of high school, but chose to go to a top 20 LAC on the east coast. Now i’m really regretting it and would love to transfer to berkeley, but I’m an OOS applicant at a 4 year college and know I have a very, very slim chance of getting in. Also, I’m not sure how my reading and writing requirement can be fulfilled since my school doesn’t offer any basic composition classes that UCB is looking for. My school only offers literature classes, and creative or technical writing classes. Did you fulfil all the pre-reqs already?

yoursky,
i couldn’t pm you back because i haven’t written 15 posts yet… is there any other way i can reply?

actually i’m almost at 15. i’ll just spam a few threads :P
