With only a small percent of transfers attending Berkeley being from out-of-state, it seems as if the average GPA listed on the admissions website (3.50 - 3.89) would not necessarily hold true for out of state transfers, of which only fewer than 10% are admitted. Does anyone know the stats or characteristics of out-of-state transfers? Also, do they consider the difficulty/prestigiousness of the four-year university you are transferring from when making their application decision?

They do consider the strength of the classes you took.

I can tell you right off the bat that you two significant factors working against you:

A) You're already in a four year university and B) You're out of state
- Rationale: The UC gives priority in the following order:
1. California Community College students
2. CSU students
3. UC students
4. Out of State Community College students
5. Out of State University Students

With that said, the UC system prides itself on the fact that they make admissions decisions on a holistic basis.

What this means is that the UC system reserves the right to admit essentially ANY student if they feel that it is their prerogative to do so.

Translation: If you give a compelling enough reason for you to transfer to Berkeley, you will get in.

---Things that will work in your favor though:
- Make sure you have the appropriate coursework done
- Keep you're GPA up, and if possible, above the average GPA range
- Write damn good personal statments

Thanks oceanpoet87 and poppin3000 for the replies - sounds like the OOS transfers are pretty much the last in the pile for all undergraduate applicants then. So I guess there's a quota the UC system must fulfil for accepting California residents and if there's any room left they fill in the cracks with a few OOS transfers, even if in some cases the OOS transfers may be more qualified than some of the Cali residents?

berkeley doesnt accept ANY out of state community college students. this kid doesnt know what hes talking about joehanus, dont listen to him at all.

yes they do…^^

Yo, im an outta state res, and went to an oos CC and U! Except i came to cali and went to a CCC too, for a semester…
My GPA was not the best back east, but out of 19 units, full time work, all honors courses, i got straight As and a B. I managed to fill IGETC too with my courses. Its sort of stupid how u have to fit igetc, and how u fit igetc is up to the CCC to approve of it. Which is SOOOO dumb. I took physics course at a top 25 university and it wouldnt fit IGETC because the CCC doesnt have that course. duh. but anyways. so i took oceanography w/lab here.
Anyways just be compelling enough with your stats, u should be fine. I wish i could give you my space :.

Why would you want to transfer to Cal from a top 25 university?
