OOS Tribe Hopeful for Class of 2016!

Hi William & Mary!
I'm an Out-of-Stater from a competitive Massachusetts high school applying RD, and I'm not asking to be chanced so much as I'm wondering what I can do from the moment on to best be a competitive applicant this fall.

Grades/Classes: Unweighted GPA: 3.6, Weighted: 4.15 (My Freshman year Weighted was 3.7, but the past two years I had a 4.35) - I took AP US History last year, as well as the AP German test sophomore year (German isn't a class at my school, but I speak it fluently).
This year: AP European History, AP Calculus AB, AP Computer Science, AP French, Honors Medieval & Renaissance Lit., and Honors Concert Choir.

EC's: I'm not going to bore you with too many individual activities, that's a waste of your time - In the fall I do theater, in the winter I do Mock Trial and in the spring I play Varsity Volleyball (captain). National Honors Society and German National Honors Society, and much more. The past two summers I did international community service projects in France.

Test Scores: ACT - 30, APUSH - 5, AP German - 5, German SAT Subject Test - 750

My parents aren't letting me fly out to any schools unless I get in, so I can't visit campus. Besides getting as good grades as possible this year (believe me, I'm working on it) and writing a well-written essay that conveys my personality, is there any advice you have to get in/do I even have a shot?

THANK YOU YOU'RE THE BEST IF YOU'VE COME THIS FAR

Definitely let us know about your fluency in German. Since it won’t be on your transcript we won’t know unless you share that aspect of your story with us.

Additionally, we might recommend you take the ACT again or try the SAT. A 30 is an okay score but it is below our middle 50% range for out-of-state students. If you can improve it will only help you and it won’t hurt you if you don’t.

Otherwise, you hit the nail on the head as for what you need to do. Show your personality in the application. Demonstrate your leadership and commitment to ECs in the EC section. Pick good people to write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Use the essay to tell us something about you we don’t already know and to show your personality. Take advantage of the optional submission and the fine arts supplement if you feel your talent in theatre is strong and you hope to continue that involvement in some way in college.

Hope this helps.
