Someone once told me that an athlete at UNC-CH who "makes the team" (NOT a scholarship athlete, at least not full scholarship) can receive a waiver for OOS tuition. I have been trying to track this down as fact or fiction, without success. Can anyone confirm (or deny)?

I've heard something similar and I'm also curious about that. What sport do you play merkur?

Well, my sport is now mostly parenting, but I enjoy golf, sailing and skiing. The student in question runs track, specifically middle distance sprints. I think he could make it as a walk-on, but a scholarship seems unlkely, given the very limited number of track scholarships available to a team.

Cool, I also do track and am hoping for a scholarship worthy season this year. What are your son's PRs? I know a few things about track recruiting standards and might be able to help.

Figure about 49 sec. in the 400m- projected.

Anyone familiar with the original question?

My d made the freshman women's crew team last year and was told scholarships 'may' be available to 'some' who walk on to the Varsity team. I think they were trying to entice the freshmen girls to stick with it. (Mine did not, practices start early every afternoon and science labs are only offered in the afternoon....no way to be in two places at once.) Because she quit after one semester, we didn't really investigate this further though.

My son is a freshman OOS on a partial track scholarship, and I've never heard anything about a tuition waiver.

Thanks, beancounter. You are the best source on this I've heard. Seems like no more than a rumor. How demanding is track on your son's schedule, or is it too early to tell?

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like wishful thinking based on the fact that oos scholarship athletes are considered as in-state for tuition and enrollment statistics. The bulk of their tuition is paid for by the citizens of NC rather than the UNC system, and the school can have more oos students.

i heard that under some rules they can consider oos students on scholarships instate for calculations of % of students from os. UNC does have generous scholarships both for athletics and need based. Need based is based on the FASFA determination of student contribution. They also just got 100 mil into the morehead scholarship program.

What does a partial athletic scholarship cover? If it is a 50% scholarship, for example, does it cover 50% of tuition only, leaving 100% of fees, R&B, etc., or does it cover 50% of those costs as well? Or does every scholarship athlete get housing and meals paid for, whether they are partial or full?

My son's scholarship covers room & board only, not any tuition or fees. His may be a "minimum" partial scholarship, I don't know. He does have a demanding schedule (as does any D1 athlete, I'm sure) but he seems to be adjusting very well so far.
