wonders if pervasive use of admission consultants by applicants to United States universities from China may be crossing ethical lines.

Is application fraud unique to applicants and consultants in China?

This article is absolutely true. I’m not sure about the middle company fraud part, but I know there’s definitely a different attitude over there towards admissions. The thing is that in China, you get into school based on ONE test score. None of our Common App + Supplements + Recommendation + 43234 Essays + SAT/ACT + SATII + Sports + Volunteering + Leadership nightmare. The result is, a lot of Chinese students take the test score part of the application MUCH more seriously than the rest of the application, for better or worse. Also, a lot of kids are desperate to get into American schools, mostly due to their parents.
