Opinion please.. UDel Honors vs PSU Main

Hello, I also posted this under a different thread so apologies for the duplicate… Looking for some advice from those who have perhaps been in the same position… DD got into UDel Honors (Lerner Business) and also PSU Main Campus (not Smeal Business, but College of Liberal Arts, Econ). We are OOS but her UDel merit money makes the net cost equal. Pros and cons? I know it’s a general question but would welcome any feedback regarding program, internships, mentoring and advising. Thank you.

Did she want to major in Economics or was her preference for business? That would be the key question for me as a parent. How did she feel about the difference between campuses with distance and size?

If she’s okay with both maker, I’d go with UDel honors without hesitation.

  • both majors. She can study Econ within UDel Business, too. Penn State's only advantage is that she can study through Paterno Fellows, but UDel Honors is a really great opportunity.

I’m not sure if I’ll be much help- but interestingly enough many years ago I was deciding between UDEL Honors and PSU main campus- I decided PSU but don’t remember why. I had a great 4 years there, got an internship that ended up as a post graduation job, and graduated with a degree from Smeal. I’m sure I would have been happy at UDel as well. If she wants a business degree, I’d be wary of being Econ/Liberal arts vs. being admitted to Smeal as I’ve heard Smeal is hard to get into, but I’m not sure if that means direct entry or after you are there, so would be worth investigating. If the majors and the relative cost is the same (or not a deciding factor) I’d re-visit both, looking at the programs she’d be in and let her decide. Honestly you can’t go wrong with either. My son isn’t going business, but has been admitted to both PSU and UDEL (not honors) so will likely be making a similar decision.

Thank you all for your help! We still have to go back and visit PSU and luckily have until May 1 to make a decision. My gut is for her to go to UDel (closer for us too!) as she will be in the Business school, which is where she wants to be, as she didn’t apply to Smeal given the low acceptance rate. It’s good to have options - feeling fortunate! Happy New Year!

I would investigate the opportunities offered by the UDel Honors (Lerner Business) before turning down a direct admission into a business school. Based on the limited info. shared in this thread, Univ. of Delaware Honors College with a direct admit into the business school seems to be the better choice.
