I am accepted to NEU to the school of engineering for the class of 2019. Can any engineering students or parents comment on their experience? Are the classes large lecture halls for the first few years? Do you feel that you have a good relationship and ease with professors?
I really liked the idea of the coop program, but I was wondering if you do three coops in 5 years, do you ever get any summer breaks or do you just plow through 5 years non stop?
If I wanted to slow down the pace and have a summer off, can I do that? Can I still do an international experience?
I was very impressed by the engineering Day in the fall, but I have seen so many comments on these boards since I applied (deferred EA) and I wonder if this school is just really seriously marketing and selling itself…or are people really happy in the Engineering school. Also is there a problem maintaining an A average?
How much work on a scale of 1-10 would you say you have. Much appreciation!
Thanks,
You will have the summer off after freshman year. After that you will likely be doing a summer session in class or be working on coop during the summer. Engineering curricula require sequencing of courses and taking an additional summer off of school and work would likely create problems. You could do a Dialogue during the summer that is an international course experience for credit.
Thank you. How do you rate the amount of work you have. Can you balance it? Are the professors easy to talk with
If you have some AP credit when you start, that might give you some more flexibility with respect to summers, but engineering is one of the most restrictive majors (and will be anywhere) because of strict accreditation reworked.
When you ask about an A average, what do you mean? A 4.0? That’s difficult, but not unheard of. College GPAs have a lower average than high school - less grade inflation. But I don’t think there’s an issue of grade deflation. None of my friends in engineering have complained about anything along those lines. And they all seem really pleased with their experience in the engineering program. Since I’m a senior, right now my Facebook feed is filled with my classmates announcing their job offers. Northeastern is good at selling itself, but the program hold up - it’s not just fluff marketing.
Thank you. I have been reading about A deflation at BU, and was not aware of it. I’m thrilled you and your friends in the engineering program are graduating and getting good job offers. If you did it all over again, would you go back to Northeastern?
Engineering is what I want. I’m just trying to sort out differences between Neu and BU.
I would absolutely choose Northeastern if I were doing it again. I’ve had opportunities I never imagined, gone on my dream co-op, won national scholarships, and will be graduating near the top of my class with a fellowship for graduate school in London ready for the fall. I’ve also made great friends and connected with professors. I could not have asked for a better college experience.
Thank you. You have real enthusiasm which I was looking for!
