First said, we like Gettysburg BUT looking for opinions on it vs. other LACs. Taking $ out of the issue, where do people feel the brightest, most driven and engaged students are within these four colleges: 1. Gettysburg 2. Connecticut College 3. Trinity College 4. Lafayette College?

We looked at the various rankings and know where they all fall. We hesitate, however, to encourage my daughter to choose a college based on rank. We admit we are biased and do love NESCAC schools and find them to be more intellectual but can the same be said of the two PA schools?

I will add that we like that CC has no Greek system, not because of the partying but because the Greek system by nature excludes people for a various reasons...hummmm...actually based on the choices of teenagers. Why do these small colleges allow Greek systems?

Opinions please. Thanks.

Hi-

I can not fully answer your question but I wanted to comment - this may seem more like a visit review than an answer to your question. My son is an accepted student at Gettysburg. Our recent vist to the school confirmed that Gettysburg is the rigt place for him so we wil be sending in our deposit shortly. I feel that all of the schools you mention will have their fair share of bright, engaged, and interesting students. We have been to all except for Lafayette. If your child feels comfortable at a particular school then that is the place for her/him!

We spent several days in the Gettysburg area and went to the campus multiple times at all sorts of hours. Everything was orderly. All of the students we encountered were friendly and welcoming. Simply walking around people smiled and said “Hi”. We came away with the feeling that Gettysburg has a wonderful sense of community. My son attended two classes - in each the class size was less than 15 students. He felt that the professors were engaged and the students came to class prepared and ready to participate. The campus is beautiful with nice, well maintained buildings. If you are a history buff than Gettysburg is a fantastic place to immerse yourself in Civil War history.

As for the greek life - at Gettysburg they do not rush until sophmore year. As someone who was involved in greek life (and not thrilled with the experience) I would say that if there is greek life on campus than having a sophmore year rush is the preferable way to do it. This gives kids a year to figure things out, get involved, make friends etc… without the added influence of a fraternity or sorority. Sophmore rush at Gettysburg made me much more comfortable with there being greek organizations at Gettysburg.

Hope some of this information helps!
