Isandin and MoTwo- Ckd w S about morning announcments at his PHS (they are online for us M/Ds to look at but nothing re high point scorers etc. ). Wanted to see if there was more over loudspeaker than posted ol. Isandin - you will love this: S doesn't ever remember hearing about high scorers in bball, lax, soccer, hockey etc. BUT, he says they announce who was high scorer in Math Meets: eg, "NumbersGeek was high scorer in Math Meet yesterday against Rival HS, followed closely by Science Nerd. Congrats, Math and Science."

I think I better get you up here right away. As a real estate broker, I'll kick-back my commission because you b-e-l-o-n-g here. (If only it were that easy).

That is amazing! Here, the sports announcing starts in middle school. I never gave it a second thought. I really think it's ok to recognize both sports and academics. Why not praise everyone for their achievemements and hard work? It's just when the sports emphasis gets out of proportion, as it seems to be at lsandin's school.
I do have a funny story -sort of related. In 10th grade, my son came home with a Varsity letter, and I had no idea what was for as he had been on the JV soccer team, not Varsity. It was for MATHLETES!!! And my daughter later got one for Marching Band! I guess our school is big on recognizing people for everything and anything!

MofT - Looks like we are both lucky in HS' priorities. Our HS does very well in most sports in its size division in the state. But clearly it recognizes and celebrates all efforts and talents (top regional jazz band, prize winning classical musicians...).
