My strengths are definitely in the humanities, which is where I will be focusing in college. When I visited Amherst it seemed awesome, the only problem is whether or not I can get in… 800 verbal, 750 writing, and 510 math (ugh!). excellent recommendations, essays, ec’s, and pretty good SAT II’s and grades. Since Amherst has such strong programs in the humanities, does anyone think they might consider letting me in despite my abysmal math score?

It's certainly possible. Amherst has an open curriculum, and I think most good colleges would rather have students who excel at one thing they are very passionate about. An 800 verbal is extremely impressive. That said, of course the competition is tough, but I don't necessarily think the math score will keep you out, and if you really want to go there, it is definitely worth a shot. Good luck.

...bump...

bumping again...

It's possible that it won't hurt you, but it would be better if you could get the math up into the 600 range

Definitely study and take the math again.

And start considering how to present yourself, given the math score, in the best possible light. How are your math grades? What sort of math classes do you take? Seek advice from your guidance counselor and trusted teachers about what to do. They may be able to give you a boost/provide an explanation in your recommendations. If you have a math teacher who can say that you do very well in math class but don't test well in math, for instance, consider asking him or her to write you a recommendation or a supplemental recommendation (or to give your guidance counselor a written statement to that effect that the guidance counselor can quote in his or her evaluation or in a separate communication with Amherst).

It's getting a bit late for this, but are you aware of the list of schools Fair Test compiles? Google it to see colleges that either don't require standardized testing results or allow mixing and matching.

Good luck.

I have already spoken to my math teacher, who will be providing a supplemental recommendation, but thank you for the input. I think I will apply to Amherst, and hopefully it will work out. If not, well, then it doesn't.

good luck biliouspigeon.
