Opinions: Wellesley VS. Barnard VS. Vassar

Wellesley College
Barnard College
Vassar College

My top liberal arts colleges
I want to pursue a double major of biology and theatre
Grad: Medical School

What are your opinions of these colleges?
Which would you prefer?

Differences? Similarities? You get the picture;)

Well obviously I’m partial to Wellesley  But those are all great schools. Have you visited the campuses? I was planning to apply to Barnard, but after visiting campus I realized it was not a good fit for me. I wanted a college that had a more “secluded campus” feel while still being near a city, but Barnard seemed to be right in the middle of NYC and I probably wouldn’t have spent a lot of time on campus. I didn’t get a chance to visit Vassar, but I’ve heard it’s pretty. The Wells campus is gorgeous, with green rolling hills and a Hogwarts-y feel.

As for academics, they’re all top-notch. My impression of the schools is that Barnard is known for its English and writing programs, Vassar for its theatre and humanities, and Wellesley for its IR and economics. (Again this is just what I’ve heard). But I have a friend majoring in Bio at Vassar and I’m planning to do Neuroscience at Wells (and continue to medical school) so it depends.

A plus with Barnard is that you can take classes at Columbia, and Wellesley students can take classes at MIT. I’m not sure if there are such exchanges at Vassar.

I recommend you visit the campuses, stay overnight if possible and talk to current and past students. It really depends on the person. I was stuck choosing between Vassar and Wellesley and I chose Wellesley, and my friend chose Vassar over Barnard. Research each school as much as you can and eventually you’ll find “the one”. :)

Because I don’t think my opinions have had reason to change and my responses were usually long:

I don’t know anything about Vassar, but I had a pretty hard time choosing between Barnard and Wellesley. It ended up coming down the financial aid. Instead of trying to decide now which college you want to go to, why not start by applying to all three? If you’re not dead set on one college, Early Decision plans are a bad idea.

The biology program at Wellesley is very strong. Many students are pre-med (rumor has it that half of the incoming classes enter as pre-med) and Wellesley has top placement into medical schools (I believe the number is about 80-90% get into their top 3 choices for med school). I’m sure there are more statistics online about this if you look for them.
