I'm applying to James Madison University and there is an optional personal statement essay. I really want to get accepted to this college, but I don't know what to write for this essay. Can I just use my common application essay? Or are they looking for something else?

Not too familiar with James Madison university but is it a common app member school? If so, I would highly suggest that you DO NOT reuse you common app essay. Try writing about a different aspect of your life? Also even if the essay is optional, try to do it anyways. In some ways that shows that you actually care about the school.

James Madison University:
"6. Personal Statement (optional)

This is the space for you to tell us more about yourself or any topic of your choosing. What does the committee need to know about you that can’t be found in your application? Be creative. Have fun. Your personal statement should be no more than 500 words."

Based on this, you can use the Common App essay. Just revised it to 500 words or less.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!
