"Optional" Supplement?!

I was deferred EA from the school I had my heart set on, so I was a bit delayed completing the application process (alright, a lot delayed). I had so many schools due on the 1st that I left the Duke supplement essay to the end. I got so burnt out that I decided to be a "rebel" and not do it - because it specifically says that it's optional.

In the weeks since, I've regretted my decision more and more. I feel like I didn't give myself full opportunity to get in. Has anyone gotten in or heard of someone getting in without doing the supplement question? Should I mail a short essay to them, considering they haven't begun reviewing applications?

Plenty of people have gotten in without one. It truly is optional, and if you think the rest of your application paints a good picture of who you are to the adcoms, then you are fine. It’s too late now anyway so it would seem a little desperate to send something in. Just relax and wait for your decision. Best of luck to you!

I got in RD without the supplement; it really is optional. However, I do have a friend who was deferred EA, sent in a supplement and was then accepted… or was waitlisted RD, sent in a supplement and was then accepted. One of the two.
