I'm totally unfamiliar with the athletic recruiting process. How would one start identifying opportunities for a field hockey player (not a US resident) who is playing junior international hockey for a leading European nation? Which top D1 schools are interested in European recruits and which are not?

I don’t think the schools wil really care where the student is from as long as they are good. Try finding athletic websites (google Duke Athletics, MIT athletics, UNC athletics etc) and then find out if thry have a field hockey team. If so, you can usually find a coaches email on that page or in the athletic directory, and email him/her the stats and some game video.

Thanks for the reply.

While it’s easy to get a list of the top D1 field hockey schools, my understanding is that some schools are very open to foreign recruits, but others are far more wary because there is a much greater risk of there not being a cultural fit and/or the player treating it as a “one and done” single year experience rather than a four-year commitment.

I guess that preference would vary per coach, so say in the email that I want to play in the Us for 4 years, make it clear that it wont be a one and done. Just make sure you contact coaches real soon

Take a look at the rosters to see which schools list international students. Then take a look at prior years to see if the players continue from year to year.

Email the head coach at every top field hockey college and university, yeah I know that’s probably about 100 emails. Yes this going to take some work. The good news is if you have strong academics and play on a National team from a county known for field hockey, the odds of getting interest are strong.

A short video of game highlights, on Youtube, will help a lot. Include the link in your email.

The email doesn’t need to be long. Grades, athletic accomplishments, and a strong interest
in attending the school the coach is at.

The trend is your friend, it seems every year more international players are being added to
college rosters.
