Hi! I’m a freshman right now and my family is planning to move to california next year. I currently just finished my first year for my high school team, and I was selected for futures this year, however the area in california we are moving to has very little high school field hockey, and it order to play I would have to go to a worse school. Would it be possible to be recruited with only club team experience and futures?
Thank youuuu
I don’t know for field hockey - your club coaches probably will though - but it is definitely possible in some of the club-focused sports e.g. volleyball, where high school teams are an afterthought and some of the very best don’t even play on high school teams due to junior national team commitments etc.
Yes, but you’ll have to do all the work to get yourself noticed. If you can, attend camps in the summer on the east coast. Play lacrosse if you can at your high school (there is a lot of crossover in the coaching world). The coaches aren’t going to be on the west coast recruiting so your name, high school, club team won’t be known to them.
Often if you are at a school that doesn’t offer the sport, you can play on another school’s team if it is in your district. Ask about that.
Good luck.
Absolutely, particularly if the club team is playing at a higher level than the high school teams and attends tournaments. It would be wise to attend summer camps and ID programs so the coaches can see you with other strong players. This is preferred to being a star among mediocre players. There are a number of sports (soccer is one) where the club teams, not the school teams, are the most common recruitment path. Follow the advice above about reaching out to coaches and start making tapes of your games so you have video highlights to send with your inquiry.
Hello @twoinanddone ! I actually am planning on playing lacrosse this spring at my current school, however where we are moving club field hockey season is in spring, and so is lacrosse season. If I don’t have too much school work, I might try and do both, but it seems exhausting
It definitely can happen in certain “club-centric” sports. My kids were both recruited for a sport their HS didn’t offer.
