I'm looking for some insight from someone in Georgia or anyone familiar with the institutions in the state. Thanks to the HOPE scholarship, I have some great options for public education in the state. I'd like to clarify that my stats aren't all that spectacular: 3.4 UW GPA, 1800 SAT/26 ACT on first time. However, I've had an epiphany and gotten my crap together and am really striving to work to my full potential. I will be retaking both tests and am shooting for all As the first semester of my senior year before I apply. So, with that in mind I realize that UGA and Georgia Tech are both reaches! I'm planning on studying the pre-med track and am open-minded to majors, though I do find psychology and neuroscience to be most interesting. My question is, if for some strange reason, I got into GT, would it be wise to attend? It's an awesome value;with HOPE, tuition would be under $4,000, which is a steal for a school ranked so highly. However, the rigorous curriculum frightens me. I realize I need a high GPA and MCAT above all to get into med school. Are some of the smaller less rigorous schools a better fit? I do NOT want to wreck my GPA and jeopardize my chances at med school. Any input or advice as to where my best options in Georgia are would be great! Thanks in advance and sorry for the rambling!

Take a look at U of West Georgia and at Georgia College in Milledgeville. You can do pre-med most anywhere.

Georgia Tech = the place where fun goes to die (like U of Chicago).

have you yet seen any improved results or is this just a recent epiphany?

do this…apply to a variety of GA publics…Georgia Southern, UGa, etc. Then, see how you do school-wise senior year with all your new efforts and work ethic.

I’ll definitely look into some more of the lesser known publics and apply there. I’m worried because I moved my junior year and my GPA took a hit. My cumulative GPA for both freshman and sophomore year was a 3.5, but when I moved to a new school, the curriculum was WAY more rigorous and I ended up with a 2.78 GPA for junior year because I wasn’t used to the rigor and thought I could hold down all honors and 3 APs with the same effort as my underclassmen years.

How about applying to Georgia State as well as UGA? Apply early action (by October 15) for UGA since you’re not far from the profile they want.

GTech may not be a great choice for a future doctor, especially since you’d enter with a GPA lower than most and would risk a low GPA barring your from med school, but you may be able to choose a less onerous major than med school and may end up doing very well since part of your GPA is due to adjusting to higher rigor. Only you would know. GTech is a big reach though.
Don’t neglect schools such as Agnes Scott (if you’re female), Spelman/Morehouse (HBCUs), Ogglethorpe as a safety, beside the obvious GA publics.
