orchestra?

Could any of the current students tell me about the college orchestra? On my son's acceptance letter, there was a personalized note saying they hoped ds would play his instrument in the orchestra. What is the quality of the orchestra? How is the conductor?
Does orchestra involve a lot of rehearsal time? TIA

I don’t think there are many students posting right now, just parents. my dd is in the symphonic band, as opposed to orchestra. I believe the music department website will let you see the amount of time needed for orchestra. That said, it’s been shown that kids in music programs usually have better grades during band/orchestra season then in the off season - they are more focused and better with time management, their friends are often on the same schedule etc.
the school has a good music program, so I would assume it’s a good quality orchestra with many music majors. to find out more your student might be better joining the Wooster facebook pages. there will be one for all students I assume and there is one for the incoming class. Also you can go to ratemyprofessor dot com and see if the orchestra conductor is listed, and read any comments. lots of wooster teachers are listed. keep in mind conductors are not always beloved.

Thanks for the info and the website. Very useful. I was hoping Lamiller would see this thread since it appears she’s back on the site and is a music major.
Maybe we’ll find out more when we visit in a couple weeks.

hey Suzukimomto2!

sorry i’ve been gone again. everyone here on campus seemed to be getting sick right and left again! ugh, can’t wait to be home and have my germs to myself lol

so, about the Wooster Symphony. it’s a fair mix of college students and a few community members, with also the occassional faculty playing as well. not all of the students that play in the orchestra are music majors, however. it’s just like the symphonic band. (btw Jersey, what section is your daughter in?) for example, 80% of the band are non-music majors, and only a handful of us others are.

Dr. Lindberg, in my opinion, is ok. i’ve heard from my private instructor and a few other students on campus that he can have a little temper, but is generally ok. what instrument does your son play? i may be able to tell you a little more about that section :)

Thanks Laura for posting. My son plays cello. We found out that Lindberg is Hayden Shilling’s, the history prof and tennis coach which my sons hopes to play for, son in law.
My son is used to tempermental conductors. :)

awesome! i’m fairly good friends with the Assistant Principal cellist and another girl in the section, both are very good  i didn’t mean to paint Dr. Lindberg in an unfavorable light, just was stating what i had heard from other sources, as i’ve never really interacted with him, apart from a hello when he passes by every now and then.

:)
