I know USC obviously has a wonderful marching band, but what about an orchestra for non-music majors?

bumpppppppp

I think the Chamber Orchestra is for non-majors.

my S was in the concert orchestra the last 2 semesters. It is for non-music major. They do one big concert at the end of the semester and sometimes some smaller ones off campus but optional.

so when do we audition for it?

first or second week of class, depending on the instrument, some don’t have to audition.

DS was in the wind ensemble one spring semester and it was pretty cool. Lots of music education majors and music minors, and many seemed to be playing something than their primary instrument just for fun and the experience. Trombone players playing euphonium, etc., so they could better teach it later.

Is the USC Concert Orchestra open to alto sax players? Or would I have to audition/join another ensemble?

i don’t think they have sax in the orchestra, isn’t it more a jazz instrument?

Concert Orchestra is the one that is opened to anyone. I did it this past semester, so I can answer some questions. We do 1 concert each semester, and then the class is over after that (usually 1-2 weeks before finals start). So there is no final for the class which is nice. String players DO NOT have to audition, everyone is accepted. However, if you want to be 1st chair, then you do have to audition. However, band players have to audition. The only exception is if there are not enough players for a section (ie if only 2 flutes sign up, then there are no auditions, but if there are 10, then you will have to audition).

If I play the string bass, would USC have one for me to borrow? I don’t have one at home…

akalboy, what instrument do you play? my S plays the violin.

pinkie1105: I do believe you can borrow an instrument from USC, as I recall Michael (the conductor) asking if anyone needed to borrow an instrument the first day, though most people did have there own. However, it would be good to double check with Thornton.

bmom: I play the viola :)

akalboy, I wonder if you and my S have met then.

Hm, it’s possible that I’ve met him, but probably not likely since I only know like 3 violinists.
