Now that he's been accepted to both schools, my son is trying to decide b/w the University of Oregon and UC Davis. Davis is more highly regarded, but Oregon represents the true "big college" experience (Pac 10 sports, flagship campus, etc.). Does anybody have any insight into either campus that could help him? Thanks in advance!

If he is looking for the “big college” experience then Davis is the better bet:

Total Enrollment
UC Davis: 31K
U of O: 20K

Undergrad Enrollment
UC Davis: 24K
U of O: 16K

UC Davis is not Pac-10, but it is Division I and is one of only three UCs that field a football team.

What does he want to major in? Davis is probably stronger in things like engineering and science. Oregon is probably stronger in the liberal arts.

Out-of-pocket cost differences? What are your sons academic interests?

Davis is a great college town. It’s one of only 3 UC campuses to have football (though not FBS). Bikes are prevalent. Davis is the original agricultural sciences campus of UC. Its agricultural sciences, entomology and veterinary programs are top-notch. I believe Davis can provide the typical college experience since most students live on-campus.

I don’t know much about Oregon except it has some of the best sports facilities in the nation thanks to Phil Knight. UO will be cooler than Davis…Davis gets quite warm in the fall.

I’d look at the cost differences then visit both before making a decision.
