ORFE perquisites

I've read the academic guide 2011 for ORFE.

It says the math perquisites for ORF 309 is MAT 201, 203, 217. Does that mean we have to take all three of those math courses or will any of those 3 be ok?

Would taking MAT 201 and 202 and another 300 level course be sufficient of ORFE majors?

Yes. You need multvariable calc and linear alg, and then a 300-level math elective. 201, 203 and 217 are the 3 different multivar calc classes, in increasing order of rigor.

217 is Linear Algebra by the way. I believe the guide says 218, which is multivariable.

So I do not have to take all three multivariable math courses? Just 201 would be fine? Would taking it at a higher level be advantageous for ORFE?

Yes, just taking 201 would be fine. I haven’t taken ORF 309, but I’ve heard from upperclassmen and the Engineering Dean Peter Bogucki that multivariable is not really used in ORFE and hence you will be fine by taking 201 instead of 203. As for 218, that’s for math majors and is really theoretical. It probably won’t be useful at all for ORFE so you should pursue that class only if you’re truly interested in math.

There is however a good amount of linear algebra in ORF 307 (as well as in further ORF classes according to Dean Bogucki). But, I’ve talked to ORFE upperclassmen who said doing 202 or 204 doesn’t matter at all. I’m currently doing MAT 204 and it seems that the linear algebra used for ORFE is mostly really basic concepts…which I’m sure is introduced in MAT 202.
