Organic Chem at different college during summer

I like to ask if it is ok to take Organic Chemistry during summer for premed fulfilment.
I like to take the class during summer to concentrate the whole summer for the class
and do research from next year fall semester(sophomore). I asked premed advisor and she said that it is ok as long as it is not community college. Of course, I am not panning to the the course at community college. I am thinking about taking at a reasonable place(but not at top 10
college)

Yes, it’s okay in the sense that it will be accepted by medical schools. Harvard offers just such a summer O-chem package, and it’s very common for pre-meds from other colleges to take it. Assuming the rest of their qualifications are in order, they get admitted to medical schools.

It’s accepted, just very slightly frowned upon. Med schools somewhat prefer required courses to be taken during the fall/spring, but don’t mind one taken during the summer. Just don’t do it habitually, and it’s fine.

RyanMK,

I sent a PM to you. Thanks.

Ryan, if you take Organic at another college in the summer does the grade get counted in the gpa calclated by most Med Schools?

No, all that gets transferred is credit.

I realize that WashU doesn’t include it in their GPA. I was wonder if Med Schools include it in their calc if you take it at a good school. Was thinking of taking is close to home in the summer which would help me save some $.

Well, I don’t know med schools’ procedures when it comes to calculating GPAs, but they’ll weight it the same as the other pre-reqs.

onecot - yes, med schools calculate it into the science GPA.

-Per my dozen or so friends now in med school (c/o 2012) who took orgo elsewhere.

I like to ask a couple of questions.

1) Is it easier to get A if you take Orgo class at Harvard?
2) Orgo at Harvard vs. Orgo at a different college: Is it really advantageous
to take Orgo at Harvard over taking the same course at a lower profile
college?

AMCAS uses your grades from ALL undergrad institutions that you have attended. This shows you how they convert your GPA to their standard GPA:
