Okay well I’ve decided I’m applying to 7 schools, but I need help organizing my list. I’ve visited UCSB and UCLA so I’ve have only seen pictures and read/heard things about the other schools. So Right now this is how I’m looking at it, but I want your guy’s opinions to make sure I have the right impressions of the following schools:

UMiami - Football, school spirit, great school that is rising in the ranks, awesome campus, beautiful weather, fun surrounding city, has a major I actually like…hopefully I get a scholarship, and I’m applying EA.

UCSB - Beach, perfect weather, amazing campus, fun school, laid-back atmosphere, great academics.

UCLA - Best overall school, great everything, didn’t like the campus and feel as much as SB, but it was still amazing.

UCSD - Great academics, amazing campus, surfing and beach, I heard it was super competitive, campus empties out on nights and weekends, horrible sports and no school spirit.

SDSU - Not close academically to the other schools, great social life, amazing weather and campus, laid-back, they have football.

UCI - Close to Newport, nice campus, safe city, supposed to be boring, asians rule the school, sports are okay.

UCSC - Nice campus, supposed to be good for undergrad schooling, D3 which sucks, too many hippies, basically it is just another safety school.

So please any comments will be appreciated…Thanks

ucla is good and i'm offended by the asian comment. I don't know if you meant it as a joke or not, but i'm still offended

What is the major you like that Miami has?

It sounds like you have negative vibes from UCSC, UCI, SDSU, and UCSD. Unless one is a safety (SDSU is, none of the others are), it makes no sense to apply.

Miami and UCSB are matches (likely admit, but don't put all your chips in). UCLA is a reach (likely not going to win there). SDSU is a safety (you can't lose!). I'd apply to those 4 schools. Don't worry about the perceived quality of academics, tons of people get good jobs.

Off Topic (SDSU) That's right, Chuck Long is the new coach, SDSU will be alright this year they have a BUNCH of talent on that team and they are in a weak conference. I remember a few years ago, they went into the Horseshoe and should have beat Ohio State (but lost) and then the next year came to the Big House and should have beat Michigan (but lost). They are also VERY good in Basketball, have an old Michigan coach (Steve Fischer) who recruited the Fab Five and won a national title. Nearly beat Indiana in the first round, IU got lucky in the last few minutes. Back on topic: Anyways, they are good in certain areas (like business), so don't worry about the perceived academic quality.

Actually, for all your schools, I would say that all have a good reputation in California. Honestly for undergrad, it's more about enjoying the environment and getting good grades than it is going to the most prestigious feeder school and getting the name on the degree. You will have good oppurtunities at any of these schools. I ask how would you rank the schools based on your liking of each campus irregardless to adademics?

Well I really want to major in Media Management and minor in Meteorology.

I would really like to apply to those 5 schools, but I just worry.....will I get in anywhere?

UMiami/UCSB --- Order depending on if I get a scholarship to UM.

UCLA --- They offer everything, but I have a feeling I won't get in.

SDSU --- I love the school, and your comments are making me realize that academics/prestige don't mean everything. And plus I want to major in something business related so SDSU should be a great alternative.

UCSD --- I love San Diego and I definately want this school as an option.

As for the others I don't like them at all....I also thought about UCD and Cal Poly, but I don't like those either......But do you think I'll be safe with those 5 schools.

GPA = UW(3.75) --- W(4.1) --- UC GPA (3.9 - 4.0)
SAT = Shooting for 1400/1600 or 2000/2400
Rank = Top 20 out of 730 students
Good ec's, leadership, sports, toughest schedule possible, also good recs for UM

I think those 5 would be a good list, I was thinking of telling you to also apply to UCSD as well, so put it on that list. You won't be without a seat at a school which you like and can afford in May, and you have 4 other schools which you like.

A2Wolves6 --- You seem to know a lot about UM.....was it one of your top choices? Also did you visit the campus?

It was one of my top choices, however, my parents wouldn't allow me to go there, and I ended up ruling it out as well.

My parents had the perception that Miami was dangerous and a big city, and they didn't want me there. After a terrible hurricane season last year, and this one projected to be worse, they don't want me spending time there. Safety was a huge concern for the campus. It was also the only school I applied to that wasn't within driving distance, and they didn't want to spend money on me flying to and from college.

As for if I could go there or not without them caring, it wasn't going to happen. The financial aid they gave me didn't come close to meeting my need, it met around 40% of my need. I would have graduated in 6 figure debt. It was also weak at the time in the business field (this was before BW rankings came out and the general consensus was US News, now I wouldn't consider it a bad B-school). And it's peer assessment ranking makes it seem like the school isn't respected outside the southeast region (my parents thought of it as a party school).

I was excited when I got accepted and thought I could be going there. I loved the big school sports, the size and private school feel, the location near the beach and the nearby entertainment in sports, and they were very strong in sports management and had tons of oppurtunities for me. I could have been interning with the football team and getting the Business/SM dual degree. But the price tag and the location/environment were the downfall.

That is exactly how my parents feel about the school, but if I get a scholarship and good financial aid then it will definately be one of my top options.

Do you think the area is unsafe? Coral Gables sounds like a nice community, but Miami seems to have a very high crime rate. Have you ever been to Miami? If so is it a nice city.....bc I see it on tv and it looks great, but I'm sure it isn't as nice as it seems, if people have safety concerns with the area.

Miami is safe like any other city- IF YOU ARE CAREFUL!!!!!

Coral Gables is gorgeous and very safe.

Hurricanes..it's just a part of life here. Yes they do come by every once in a while, but it's actually the best natural disaster that you could ask for. You get notified in advance and you can stay safe easily. UM does a very good job at taking care of students. In fact, there was a campus lockdown (nobody could go out) during the power outages after the last hurricane.

Yeah, that's what I had for Miami. I applied even though my parents wouldn't let me, and I figured "let the money talk". It didn't, it ended up being my most expensive college, and there was no way I could possibly convince them to let me attend.
