Orientation 2005

Wow thanks meder - I can't wait for the Next Big Mailing too=)

do keberos ids allow underscores and full-stops? They're supposed to be 3-8 characters right?

geniezclone - what's the time difference for u? Singapore is exactly 12 hours ahead of boston, so i'll have to do a complete switch of night and day=(

Yes, me, too. Thailand is 12 hours ahead of Boston as well, but only in the fall. Right now, it's 11 hours ahead (because of Daylight Saving Time).

so is the i3 dvd included in the NEXT BIG MAILING?

portlander:Yes it is.

I won't have to undergo any time zone change hooray! (Well actually during winter I have to step back an hour, but it's not really a problem).

Boston is 10 hours behind us, so, i'm also going to be a bit drowsy at the orientation

Is international orientation on 22 August? I think I'll only arrive on 21 Aug-the flight from Singapore is like 24 hours! Meder and Amrik, how long will your flights take?

i haven't chosen the carrier yet, but something like 20-25 hours, with 17 hours in air.
yea, orientation starts on 08/22 but we have to be at MIT on 08/19 through 08/21
and are you, mit_hopefulgirl, flying through the pacific ocean?

It will take me about ~3.5 hours to Miami, a layover of a few hours (lets cut it down to 2 for calculation purposes) and 3 hours 10 min from Miami to Boston. So about ~9 hours.

psssh. no one sleeps during rush; if you do, remember, boycott mandatory events!

to my knowledge, usernames can have underscores but no dots or other wonky characters, and are all lowercase; list names have dashes, however.

actually, i don't think you should boycott mandatory events. whatever they are, they're an experience that you'll only have once. and some of them can be pretty useful.

Total disagreement from this end regarding the supposed "utility" of mandatory events.

Most of the mandatory events put on during orientation -- the "don't drink alcohol" talk, the "meet the entire class for five seconds in two hours" event, the "don't rape people" talk, the "yay diversity" talk... while you are there, it may feel like you are learning something relevant to your future. But you are probably not. Unless you are planning to be a racist, rapist, perpetual drunk, or class politician.

Events which are useful for your future life include rush, the "here are all the freshman classes and their descriptions" talk, the "come get free stuff and learn about all the activities" fair, and the "come get free stuff and learn about all the different majors" fair.

hey kids, this is a disclaimer, for all and sundry.
don't listen to me blindly when i give you advice, b/c i'm a sketchy upperclassman. i have my own agenda, and it's not exactly what the administration wants for you. do use your judgment, however, and think critically about how your time is best used. i have a few answers to that question, but your answers may vary. and that's not a bad thing, really. it is something to think about, however.

i still tell stories about some of my own experiences during rush, and that's not just b/c storytelling is what i do. i guarantee, none of these stories involve mandatory events...except maybe fairplay, and that's only b/c i happened to run into my best friend from 3rd grade, whom i hadn't seen since, after switching schools and then moving out of state. i would've run into her by the end of the week anyway; it's just madly ironic that i managed it at fairplay, of all places.

i agree with mollieb's assessment of which events are useful; things relating to classes, majors, activities, and most things involving free food are worth your time, b/c those are things you'll probably be doing when you're a student. also, note, thay aren't actually an experience you can only have once; it's not like they check your ids or have a "you must look this clueless to enter" meter. if i went to the alcohol awareness talk as a frosh, i certainly don't remember it. but will i be there this fall, sitting in the front row sipping on an unidentified beverage from a brown paper bag? you bet...so long as i don't have to be at work, of course.

meder - I'll probably fly the other way, across europe, which is supposed to be faster

Isn't the flight from Singapore nonstop to LA? Shouldn't that route be shorter?

nope it's quite a distance from LA to Boston anyway=( There's a direct flight from Singapore to NY too, but it's really expensive.
