Orientation date

Is earlier the better? There is an middle of June date for the 2 day orientation, but we have registered for the end of June dates …should we be concerned about classes getting filled?

Son is a CS major…thus the concern

If I am not mistaken, the orientation is when classes are scheduled (on a first-come first-serve basis), so it is advantageous to have an earlier one if possible.

You can see what sections are currently open for all Fall 2018 courses in the following link

https://app.testudo.umd.edu/soc/

There is a slight advantage to earlier orientations with a wider selection of times for classes but they do reserve sections that are opened up for later orientations. My oldest son had an early orientation but was still waitlisted for a class. He figured out that openings came available on orientation days and was able to make changes and get what he wanted. The university works hard to ensure freshman get what they need and the students figure out how to navigate the system quickly.

The earlier the better! They can only open up so many more seats in a class. Freshmen get into all the classes they want, usually, but getting desirable sections is KEY!!

@whenyubelieve…do you think its just better to do the cs major orientation date as opposed to cs major honors college. The honors college one is at a later date…wasn’t sure if it makes a difference

just checked now …i guess the other dates are taken :frowning:

@priya2015 I went to the Honors College one and I don’t think it made much of a difference other than maybe you could potentially meet people in your program. I know a few of my friends found their roommate from when they met them at Honors orientation (they split you up by colleges/departments during orientation, but it’s usually easy to meet people from the LLP you’ll be in, since most LLPs are centered around one sort of area of interest. ex. ILS - life sciences = lots of bio and chem majors, ACES - cybersecurity = lots of CS and engineering majors, etc.)
