“Transfer students
(1-day orientation sessions; selected majors each date)”

It all depends on your major - I don’t think it has everything to do with when you sign up.

It does depend on your major, but when you sign up is important as well. There were two dates available for my major. One was the 3rd date possible, while the other was the 10th date possible. I was able to pick the 3rd date because it had not filled up yet.

But yeah, I rather wish it was possible for me to choose the July 20th date!

Thats interesting to have same orientation as many cc users.

Hello sugar_sweet111 and danmam

You were the first ones among us to attend the orientation this summer . . . how did it go ? What tips would you give to the rest of us to get the most out of the two days ?

jotajota218 - Hopefully you will be able to drop a line this week.

I’m with TheKiwi. For those of you that have already attended, what was it like?

Well, mine is tomorrow (well, it’s after midnight; I could say today). I can give a report when I get back on Friday.

Thanks AT9 and Stewie32.

Also does anyone know what time on day two can I expect to be done ? I will have to hit the road with my grandparents that afternoon no later than 4 pm, so I am hoping to finish by 3 pm (which gives me just enough time to drive to their house). I read somewhere not much happens on day two.

Hey Everyone. Sorry this is late. I had this nice little report written up, but then someone asked me to look something up on Google. I accidently googled something while I had this site up and lost everything I had written.

So here is a brief summary:

You get to Coffman Memorial Union (CMU) in the morning. You drop your stuff of at Yudof Hall. You have to check-in/register at the table designated to your college (CBS, CLA, IT, etc). They give you a bag, nametag, and schedule of the day’s events. You can go to several different morning sessions. The topics range from student groups to study abroad to residence hall tours. I suggest doing these until the University Welcome. If you are in the Honors Program, you have a mandatory session where you go meet current and other future Honors students and learn about the University Honors Program.

After this, you have the University Welcome. There is a speech about achievement, diversity, etc. Some students do a skit about transitioning to the college experience. This part is pretty boring. Next, you go up to a room on the 3rd floor of CMU. Don’t worry about finding your way; there are plenty of students to point you in the right direction. In the room (which is designated in your schedule), you will meet your Orientation Leader for the rest of the day and other students in your college (CBS, IT, CLA). There are about 20 other students in your group. You do some activities to get to know each other.

Next, you go one of three sessions. You either go to lunch or one of two college transitioning sessions. Eventually, you will go to all three. The college sessions are just related to the average day as a college student and transportation at the U. After lunch, there are more sessions. They relate to U Card, housing (on- or off-campus), and preliminary academic advising specific to your college.

After these sessions, you go eat dinner in Centennial Hall. Then you go check in at Frontier Hall and pick up your luggage. You get to choose your roommate. You have a little while to chat with your new friends. Next you have the Pieces of the Puzzle Presentation. This is put on by the orientation leaders. It is both hilarious and serious. They talk about college issues like drinking, partying, sex, STDs, peer pressure, rape, etc. After this, you go talk about this with your group and orientation leader. The discussion is a relfection on what you just saw.

After this, you are free to go. There is bowling and pool in the basement of CMU. There is a movie back at Frontier. You can walk, check your Facebook, go to sleep, or whatever else you like. There is no curfew.

Basically, after Pieces of the Puzzle, you are free to do what you want. Your orientation leader is no longer going to lead you places. They aren’t going to wake you up in the morning or make sure you get to your sessions. You have to be responsible for yourself. I would suggest waking up early in the morning, doing your routine, and eating breakfast. You want to eat early because you have to get your U Card this morning. You don’t want to wait in lines; they can get pretty long. After your U Card session, you have to report to a Hall or CMU for your registration/academic advising. It depends on what college you are in. Make sure you get there on time. They will leave/start without you.

You get quite a bit of individual attention, especially if you are in Honors CBS or IT. There are college students there to talk to you about the classload and rigor. I would suggest asking a lot of questions.

When you are done registering, you have to fill out a couple of surveys and go pick up a t-shirt (if you are in the Honors Program). Then you are free to go. You can expect to be done by about 1 pm at the latest. I got done at 12:30, but I went to go tour a biomedical research lab that one of the students was working in (it was awesome).

General Tips:

 • Be social. You aren’t going to have any fun if you don’t talk to people. The sessions are pretty boring, but when you are walking or have a chance to talk to your peers, do it.
 • Ask questions. Don’t be shy. The student leaders are very helpful and nice. They give great answer. It is a great time to learn about the college experience.
 • DON’T SKIP ANYTHING!!! You will have to repeat orientation.
 • Don’t bring alcohol, haha. Some kid tried to sneak some in. Needless to say, he got caught and is in some pretty big trouble.

What to Bring:

 • Change of clothes
 • Basic toiletry items (whatever you would use at home)
 • Alarm clock for the morning
 • Notebook and pen/pencil (optional, I didn’t bring one, but I noticed a lot of kids did)

Well, that is all I can remember right now. I hope this helped. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

thanks a bazillion million!!! if everyone did this when they came back from orientation we’d be so prepped haha.

Thanks Stewie32 for a thorough overview and great tips. Now I know what to expect. Thanks again.

i was wondering, for those of us who were admitted to CBS or IT, can we reserve classes if we have late orientation? And does anybody know how fast classes such as claculus 2, physics w/calc, and chem principles 2 get filled up??
