Does anyone know why it costs $275 for a mandatory orientation? I understand food and housing in the dorms but $275 just seems a bit high when i think other schools have free orientation?

A lot of public schools go through this type of scheme. Because the government has cut off significant funding to the schools (I doubt the state provides more than 20% of the funding for Clemson), schools have to find ways to get money without significantly raising the tuition. They do this by charging exorbitant fees for everything and that includes orientation. I got charged a $50 library fee this year and have been charged a lab fee for English 103 (there was no lab section of this class but there is on the schedule so they can charge a fee).

For example, at my home institution, the University Of Massachusetts, fees are $10,000 more than what tuition is (and scholarships only cover tuition) so that’s how they get money from you. At the University of California, tuition is free for in-state residents, but they pay $10,000+ in fees. and on and on and on…

Soon they will be charging an extra $25 for each piece of luggage they bring too.

Will that be for carry-on as well as checked?
