<li> I don’t think it matters either way. Certainly check when you can start moving in, though, I’m not sure when housing for prefrosh starts. People definitely won’t have formed all their groups of friends by then, though ;)</li>

<li><p>You won’t miss any “good orientation events” during the first day - those are most “welcome to MIT”-type events. Besides, everyone knows the best events are during REX/Rush! 
A lot of people will have friend groups (either from CPW or FPOPs), but they are usually very open to finding others, especially when you’re going through REX. In fact, many of my friendships were formed during the Next House housing lottery, which was a good 6 days into orientation, haha.</p></li>
<li><p>I participated my freshman year. Depending on the project, it’ll take you 4-6 hours or so. I definitely enjoyed the service project and met a few friends on the way, but it’s not an absolutely necessary thing. If you’d rather stay on campus and attend some more orientation/REX events, no one’s going to scoff at you =)</p></li>
