Orthodontist near UChicago

I’m starting at UChicago in the fall and I need to get some orthodontic work done. Has anyone been to any of the orthodontists around?

There don’t seem to be many orthodontists in Hyde Park… Would it be practical to go into the city instead? I won’t have a car with me and I’d rather not spend too much time away from campus (given the high work load). Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

My kids use Zocdoc to find doctors, then Google for online reviews.

  1. Hyde Park is the city. It's a particular neighborhood. You probably have to go to another neighborhood for an orthodontist (although I am a little surprised if there are absolutely none in HP). (NB: Google immediately identified four offices with orthodontists in Hyde Park, and two more within a block or two of the HP line in Kenwood or Woodlawn.)
  2. It's very easy to get to the part of the city called "the Loop," which is effectively the old central business district, or to the "South Loop," which is, yup, the area just south of the Loop. I would bet there are lots of orthodontists in those neighborhoods. The other neighborhood where my kids would go to get basic needs met was called "Belmont," on the north side, near the Belmont Red Line stop.
  3. As a student, you will get a transit pass letting you ride for free on any of the "El" lines or the CTA buses. You can also pay to take the "Metra" train, or of course ride-sharing services. To get to the Loop or South Loop, you will generally use some combination of the 55 or 59 bus, the 6 bus, the Red Line or the Green Line El, or the Metra. For Belmont, you will probably want to take the 55 bus to the Red Line.
  4. "I'd rather not spend too much time away from campus (given the high work load)." Wrong attitude. Chicago (the city) is a wonderful city with a ton to offer, not just orthodontists. It would be a tragedy not to take advantage of being there. The UChicago work load is nowhere near high enough to justify never leaving the campus.

I would ask Health Services at the college and see if they have any local recommendations.
