Did anyone watch? If so, what did you think? Any surprises?
Overall, it was a good show. No politics, no slapping of anybody, just a festive celebration of the art of filmmaking. Great musical numbers, too.
Other than one very awkward moment… Kimmel should have left Malala alone.
I agree! Yes, that was a little awkward when he tried to tease Malala.
I think Kimmel was a good host and I think he was on stage for just the right amount of time. I hate when the host dominates the whole show. Some his jokes weren’t that funny, but overall none of them were terrible.
I was actually surprised that the speeches weren’t more political. The only political statement I did appreciate was Alexei Navalny’s wife’s statement after the documentary about her husband got the Oscar…
Classic traditional ceremony celebrating achievement in film; they were being quite cautious.
If Kimmel had made less jokes about running late (and the slap), they could have ended on time. And yes, his terrible joke with Malala should not have happened - she gave a very mature response.
I posted this elsewhere, but the definition of “adapted screenplay” as including “adapted from characters” in prior films was nutty. Isn’t it supposed to be adapted from another medium?
I thought the dresses were not all that exciting; lots of black this year. I entertained myself by picturing some of them as MOB or MOG gowns.
No surprises but I hadn’t seen hardly any pictures - except for the big winner. The Editing Oscar was so well earned! I can’t even imagine what it took to create some of those sequences.
I actually liked the dresses. No over the top stuff or what were they thinking stuff… Maybe Ciara (Russell Wilson’s wife and singer) with her fishnet dress. Not going to post a link because maybe NSFO.
Oh, and that woman who wore what looked like a pillowcase on her head that clearly blocked the view of the stage for people in at least two rows behind her!
I was thinking the same thing! My husband and son were very annoyed by that, they’re big movie buffs, so they have a lot of opinions about the winners!
I didn’t see any dresses I would want to wear, that’s for sure. I didn’t see any dresses that I really loved, but there were some elegant understated ones.
Yeah, I think they should’ve seated her somewhere else, there was no way anyone behind her could see…
As for surprises, I kind of expected Elvis and The Fabelmans to come away with at least one award. And I’m also a little surprised that Banshees of Inisherin and Tar didn’t win anything either…but then again, not everyone can win…
I enjoyed the entire show, except the Malala sequence - I wonder, Jimmy Kimmel is quite good at improv, why he didn’t just keep moving. It’s like he got stuck.
I was delighted by the diversity of wins and happy they showed all the categories.
I thought the fashion aspect was just ok. I wanted a few WOW moments, that I didn’t get. The white thing in the audience wasn’t a hairpiece, but a collar. Yes, if I were sitting behind them I’d have been ticked off.
I record the show and start watching about 40 minutes in so I can f/f through commercials - I ended about 10 minutes after the live broadcast.
My only negative comment to what I thought was a good show, was that for parts of the in memoriam sequence the camera was panned back and I could not read the names - just too small and I had my glasses on. (could have worked maybe if the names were bigger or darker).
Loved short round hugging Indy at the end. Moved by Travolta mourning Olivia Newton John. Liked the guy singing his thank you as a Carpenter’s song.
Yeah, that fell flat. I wonder if maybe he was expecting Malala to react differently. She didn’t seem at all interested in the joke, which is totally ok, but I think Jimmy wasn’t prepared and like you said, just got stuck.
I was also expecting Angela Bassett to win Best Supporting Actress. I’m glad Jamie Lee Curtis won, I’ve enjoyed a lot of her movies through the years, but it seemed like Angela Bassett was the favorite. Same with Austin Butler and Brandon Fraser. I expected Austin Butler to win, but I heard that Brandon Fraser did a wonderful job in The Whale…
Tangential to the actual awards, but I truly disliked the, “sad beige,” carpet. So many women in white which did NOT pop off that carpet at all. Makes me wonder when everyone found out the red carpet was not going to be red. I am guessing after dresses had been acquired.
I agree. That’s been a problem with a lot of award shows recently - BAFTA’s, Grammys, Emmys
Basically, if it’s not 100% original, it’s adapted. Sequels, prequels, and remakes are all considered adapted. It’s not simply limited to films basen in a novel.
…and Kirstie Alley - they were best friends -
Since the pandemic we have fallen out of our habit to see movies in theaters. D23 had really wanted to see “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and she drug us to see it. We thought it was good. I guess she picked the right one.
The dresses worn to the awards ceremony were definitely more toned down and “ready to wear”- like. The wilder stuff must have been saved for the after parties.
I want the dress worn by Julia Louis-Dreyfus! It even has pockets.
Do you understand the movie? I tried to watch it twice but gave up not even half way. Just couldn’t figure it out.
I don’t think you’re expected to understand it - just experience it! I gather the overriding theme was family relationships, especially mother-daughter.
There were some sequences that I wanted to watch frame by frame because so very much sped by so quickly. I must say those were some of the weirdest multiverses imaginable - yet someone imaged them!
I didn’t watch, but saw Lady Gaga’s performance, which was amazing. Not only a vocal masterpiece, but loved her plain clothes and almost-makeup-free natural look.
I was amazed how well she removed that red carpet makeup!
