Right now, I’m kind of confused.
Perhaps I overrated myself as a student? I’m not sure. I applied to Ohio State in regular application.
I got the decision today saying that I wasn’t accepted. I applied to OSU with a civil engineering major.
And so far, I’ve gotten in to Vtech’s engineering program, pitt and penn state. (All first year general engineering)
And got waitlsited by UIUC (1st major was general engineering while the 2nd choice was civil engineering and UIUC is #2 in the country in civil engineering)
And somehow I got rejected by OSU?
I’ve been looking forward to OSU when I applied but now I’m disappointed. I’m not mad but just kind of confused. Why is this?
Also, I’m an international student living in the U.S.
Don’t take it personally, all colleges especially big ones have to draw the line somewhere and to the casual observer, or in this case the rejected applicant, their decisions seem arbitrary.
I’ve been told that Ohio State really toughened their acceptances this year. It depends on what your GPA and test scores were. My parents are friendly with some staff at Ohio State, and they said they’re trying to accept students with an average 28 ACT score or 1260 (M+R) SAT score, though I don’t have any information as to what they looked for in terms of GPA/Extra curriculars. From what I recall, they did mention being more selective with engineering majors. While somewhat unlikely that such an abrupt change would occur in just one admissions pool, it’s possible that OSU is simply attempting to become an elite school in the upcoming years.
Also OSU is slightly more selective than the other schools you applied to, so it’s not like you were accepted to Harvard and rejected from your small, local college. It’s not especially surprising that you weren’t accepted simply because all the other schools that are somewhat similar did choose you.
If you still met their new criteria, chances are they ran out of space or something of the sorts. You shouldn’t take it personally considering you got into other great schools. Perhaps OSU wasn’t right for you, or you just underestimated it.
