D. got into BU, NYU, Michigan, Case Western, OSU, and University of Maryland for Music Ed. (voice)

Factoring some merit scholarship money known to us at this point in time...... OSU and Maryland are the only affordable options. Anyone know the pros and cons of each, quality of the music ed. programs, voice programs, etc.?

----Grateful for some guidance

You may want to speak directly with the heads of music ed at these schools. I also spoke the our private teacher (who also teaches in public school) and the hs teachers for some input. Do the students start ME courses/class observations in the freshman year, or do they place into ME in year 3? Take a look at the methods courses and how much time is actually in the classroom. How are they prepared for student teaching? What do public school teachers have to say about the quality of the student teaching that comes out of these programs? Do recent graduates feel that they were prepared for teaching?

OSU is switching from quarters to semesters in 2012. How will that effect the course of study? Does your D have a preference of one over the other? If she plans to take some courses over the summer to lighten the load during the year, then a school with semesters may give her more options.

Sounds like you have some very nice options. Good luck!

Beyond what mom4989 has stated, check their placement rates. Many music ed programs boast 100% placement rates, but what you need to know is how many are in at least .75 or more full time equivalent positions. Also, another indicator is how many grads are still teaching five (and ten) years down the road.

The programs that get a student exposed and immersed in the classroom earliest are the ones to look for.

Also, you may want to look down the road to how student teaching assignments are handled. Will she need off-site housing that semester, or transportation to and from assigned schools?

Thank you to all for this info. So grateful for the helpful people on CC!

Don’t really know how to get the more detailed statistics on full/vs. part-time placement and how long graduates stay in the field. Do the colleges have those stats if their asked?

Ask at the department level. Most will happily share their rates and success stories. Sometimes the info will also be found within the music ed department webpages.

Another thing to consider…does your student have an idea where she wants to teach? If MD…go to UMD…if OH…go to OSU. The reality is that it’s a LOT easier and seamless to do any education certification program in the state in which you want to teach…that school will fulfill THAT state’s requirements and the taking of the initial Praxis tests should be built into the program for that state. If your kiddo goes to school in Maryland, they will fulfill Maryland’s requirements for teacher certification which may be different than Ohio…or any other state. If graduating from Maryland and wanting certification, say in Ohio…the student would then have to take the Ohio Praxis tests and be certain they fulfilled Ohio’s certification requirements.

I used MD/Ohio as my example. There is not really reciprocity in teacher certification from state to state anymore except in some very small pockets of the country.
