Hello all! I have narrowed down to these three amazing schools and I am struggling to pick between them. I am instate for Ohio State, and it is my cheapest option. UVA is affordable, and Michigan is the most expensive. I plan on being pre-med for the time being. I love Charlottesville and Ann Arbor, and the Short North area of Columbus is great–my issues lie within academics. Ohio State and Michigan seem to offer a lot more flexibility in academics (like number of majors)–for example, I am very interested in public health: U of M and OSU have an entire College/School of Public Health, while at UVA it only exists as an interdisciplinary major. But Charlottesville and the UVA campus is probably my favorite out of the three (although I like the social scenes at all of them). My school is practically a feeder school to OSU so I may be biased (just like the OSU thread may be ). Any help regarding academic options at these three amazing schools would be much appreciated!
So academic fit is best with OSU and Michigan, then UVA (OSU 6 points, Michigan 6 points, UVA 2 points)
Environmental fit is best with UVA, then Michigan, then OSU (UVA 3 points, Michigan 2 points, OSU 1 point)
Social fit is even (no need to award points…)
Cost fit is best with OSU, then UVA, then Michigan. (OSU 6, UVA 4, Mich 2)
(I think Cost and Academics are about twice as important as the other two – but you can assign points in any manner you see fit – pun intended.)
So I have the final score as:
Ohio State 13
Michigan 10
UVA 9
If there weren’t double-weighting for academic and cost fit:
Ohio State 7
Michigan 6
UVA 6
And if the OP intends to go to med school it might be appropriate to weigh the cost of the undergrad degree
even higher. Although I acknowledge that many students plan to go to med school but end up changing their path.
@prezbucky @adlgel Thanks for your input! I do agree about weighing the costs for undergrad higher; at this point I think I am going to eliminate U of M for that reason. While OSU is still definitely cheaper, UVA is still in the affordable range. I feel like OSU may be a better academic fit (for public health at least), but going with what adlgel said, I may change my mind for something that might be stronger at UVA.
