UVA v U Michigan Pre-Med

My D was accepted EA to both. We are OOS from NY, so money is not a factor at this point. She is planning a bio major. We have not visited either school yet, but both look like fantastic places. Any thoughts about pros and cons? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. While I don’t know about pre-med specifically, I am sure that your D could look up requirements, classes, etc on each website to get a better insight into program. I hope you will visit both as seeing and getting the overall campus feel is so important. I went to UVA back in the dark ages (when I just applied, got in and literally showed up to move in day!). But, things I do know: UVA has about 3700 freshman in their entering class, while Michigan has about twice that amount - 7100 in the freshman class. So while they are both wonderful public schools Michigan is quite large. Pros for UVA: size (amazing public school - not too large), ranks #3 behind Berkeley and UCLA overall ( BUT lower for biology), and milder weather than Ann Arbor. My personal opinion is to visit both during Accepted Student Days (DOTL for UVA), don’t get caught up on the rankings, and go for fit and feel! Oh, and a huge pro - I love all the traditions at UVA.

I was in the exact same situation last year, and I am also pre-med. I definitely loved the traditions at UVA, has a different vibe than Michigan. Being OOS, UVA gave me more financial aid than Michigan (the Access UVA program is great). I absolutely love both schools, and the decision was a tough one. You can’t go wrong with either! Congrats on getting in to both OOS!!

Being premed can be difficult and downright depressing at times. Anything that makes your life a bit easier can make a huge difference in your outlook. Virginia is gorgeous.
