Other Colleges

I'm just curious and if this isn't the right place for this question then let me know and I'll delete it but what other universities did you guys apply to? I was planning on applying to 12 schools and in the first "round" I applied to University of Miami, University of Michigan, Columbia, WashU, UChicago, and a local state university as a backup. I planned and have essays or outlines for 6 more... Stanford, Yale, Brown, Hopkins, Duke, and Penn... But after UChicago's acceptance I don't really know if I care enough to spend the extra money.... I love Chicago and am ecstatic that I was accepted however my parents have said they are willing to fund the other six applications for the possibility of having more options. I guess what I'm asking is are any of you in the same boat? Unsure of whether or not to apply to any more colleges after a UChicago acceptance?

Thanks for your thoughts, again if this is the wrong place just let me know!:)

It is rare for Harvard SCEA accepted students to apply to other schools in the regular round but it is generally expected that those who get into any other top schools like Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Chicago, MIT, Caltech to apply to each others programs in the regular round…especially throw in an application to Harvard since they have nothing to lose…but, those who did ED unfortunately and got “in” to their ED school do not have the opportunity to shoot for the stars in the second round we call regular decisions.

For each of the other colleges you’re thinking of, ask yourself if you’d actually go there instead of UChicago. When you weigh that college against UChicago, you should be conflicted about which one you’d enroll in.

If you apply and get in somewhere you wouldn’t have enrolled in anyway it would just be a waste of money.

One of the big factors that I think is making me choose to apply to a few more universities is the financial aspect. If I get a better aid package at some of the universities I plan on applying too then I would go there instead of UChicago even though UChicago gave me a great estimated grant. I already have the supplemental essays for Duke, Hopkins, Brown, and Penn finished so I think I am just going to apply to those places at least, and then probably Stanford or Yale. My friend was accepted to Brown and got a fantastic aid package so if accepted there then that could be the best decision. AHHH choices haha. Thanks for the thoughts!

I applied to Brown ED and was deferred and to UChicago EA and was accepted. I’m applying to Williams College, Amherst College, Princeton University, and McGill University RD.

@hevydevy Why not Dartmouth? There’s no extra essay required.

No interest in Dartmouth. Also, I have no interest in more application fees. It just doesn’t seem like the place for me.

I got in EA, but I’m applying to Swarthmore because I live in NYC and I’m not quite sure I want to go as far as Chicago/can afford to go that far. I’m also applying to Oberlin, which is also far, but I might get merit aid though…and St. John’s College for possible merit.

I’m in the same position as you. UChicago was my top choice, so when i got in, I wasn’t enthusiastic about applying elsewhere. But, I would highly suggest you apply because as I have come to realize, you might find out that you really aren’t AS enthusiastic and set on UChicago as you thought you were (not that you will lose interest, but you may not feel so sure/may have regrets after Jan 1).

im applying to some other top 10s, just to test my luck with a few, and others because they are just as good as Chicago but are somewhat cheaper

Yeah that’s what I have decided…I already had most of the work done for the other schools so I figure why not if my parents are pushing me to do it and are willing to pay. I still can’t believe that I will have applied to 12 schools… I originally told myself I was going to cap it at 6 haha! Still thankful that I have an acceptance to UChicago as well as a fantastic financial aid package… Made my Christmas so much more enjoyable.
