Somewhere along the way in researching teachers for sopranos, I found wonderful things about Myra Merritt at Bowling Green. I also heard good things about Dr. Rodgers there. The reputation there is that the undergrad voice will be nurtured and that there are good performance opps since they don't have a large grad program.

Thanks for the info about Bowling Green. We have heard generally good things but nothing specific regarding teachers. Finding a supportive and nurturing teacher is certainly a primary goal. My D auditions at BGSU this Saturday Feb. 2. Of course we hope it goes well.....who would want to repeat a bad Groundhog day!

Marslizard,

My D loves Baldwin-Wallace. They seem to have a wonderful program. They are very nice people and from what we can tell have great teachers and a nice campus. She is waiting patiently to hear if she gets in. We heard that will be in March!

I'm so excited for my daughter, I could just bust...so I'm posting here. My daughter received tentative approval for her individualized BA today (tentative only because they've asked her to make three very minor changes in her proposal). She has to submit the proposal again by Wednesday, incorporating the changes, and then it will go through the reading process before approval. Her defense of the proposal was today, so she has a verbal OK and the rest is just a formality. So by the end of this quarter, her new major will be Global Music and Cultural Relations (the new name is one of the changes she was asked to make). I'm so thrilled for her and continue to be touched by the support she is receiving from the music department; her advisor (the chair of the music department) actually cancelled one of his classes today so he could be with her while she defended the proposal. I'm not sure how his students felt about that, but it meant the world to my daughter!

mezzomom, congrats to d (and you). You seem like you're bursting at the seams with pride. :)

Violadad, I am! The process for approval is not an easy one, and my daughter really put in a lot of work (she started spring quarter last year). She had to have written recommendations from her advisor and a professor from a different department; approval from two outside specialists; a listing of all the classes to be considered for the major, as well as a quarter-by-quarter breakdown to show she could fit them all in; and a statement of her educational objectives. It doesn't sound like a lot on paper, but it's a bit trickier than it looks...e.g. the "outside specialists" had to be noted authorities or have mega-credentials. Finding them and contacting them was enough of a challenge; having them review her proposal meant asking some very busy people to take a chunk of time that wasn't always readily available. She was amazed at the graciousness of the folks she finally contacted, but it took months to get their sign-off. The process itself was a wonderful learning experience, and I'm beyond thrilled that it also paid off for my daughter.

Congratulations to your daughter - and you! What a special accomplishment and how wonderful to have so much support.

Yes, I agree. Congratulations to you and your Daughter!

YEAH!!! I'm so happy for her (and YOU), I know it has been a long hard process!
