Returned yesterday from a very snowy audition day in Westerville. Blizzard conditions Friday afternoon into Saturday morning prevented several from attending, but as promised, they did not cancel auditions. I think it was the first or second day of auditions, with several more on-campus dates upcoming and Unifieds, of course. By my best guess there were 30-40 kids, fairly evenly split m/f. One asked about numbers and they said they generally audition 500-700 per year. (I am not sure if this includes pre-screens or not. Nor am I sure if they include D&P in this count.) In any case, as you probably know, they accept 8 to MT and 8 to straight acting (4 boys/4 girls each) and 24 D&P in various disciplines. They did not mention how many BA Acting kids they take, but those are also auditioned spots. They stressed very much that they are looking for a complete “company” every year and are very concerned about “fit”. Very nice, friendly day started at 8am and ended around 1 for D&P (only a couple of applicants for the day, though I know that several upcoming dates are fully booked). Acting & MT kids had longer days planned—dance calls, songs, monologues, etc. Songbook with extra pieces that could be sung on request was required. Day included tours of Theatre Dept as well as campus, parent sessions, optional lunch with current theatre students, etc.
